EXPERIENCE PROFILE

Mr. Valenzuela has over 12 years of experience as a Structures Project Engineer which is exclusive to the state of Florida. He has experience with design-build and traditional projects. Juan currently serves as a Senior Project Engineer for Florida Bridge and Transportation, Inc. and is responsible for the design, analysis and checking of a wide variety of transportation structures. Mr. Valenzuela has also been involved in the supervision and management of staff engineers and technicians on multiple projects and tasks. Mr. Valenzuela has had extensive involvement in the design, development, load rating and detailing of prestressed concrete bridges plus steel plate girder and box girder bridges along with various value engineering change proposal (VECP) tasks on a wide variety of designs. Mr. Valenzuela possesses strong design knowledge of foundation, substructure and superstructure components for new bridges, bridge widenings and bridge replacements. He has participated in other structural design assignments including design of steel sheet pile walls, concrete retaining walls, mast arm and strain pole signal structures, sign structures and box culverts.

REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS

CR 245 Over Olustee Creek, FDOT District Two, Union/Columbia County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as the design project engineer for this design build bridge replacement project with Leware Construction Company. The project consists of 6 spans over Olustee Creek. His responsibilities included design of FIB-36 prestressed girders, geometry, slabs, load rating and bent designs along with the analysis of temporary bridge and crane lifts. Quality assurance checks and plans preparation for all phases of design were also performed. The bridge is a 90 degree 450 foot long structure with use of FIB 36 girders founded on 24" prestressed concrete piling.

Juanita Avenue Over Taylor Creek, FDOT District Four, St. Lucie County, Florida – On this design build project with Lucas Marine Construction, Mr. Valenzuela served as project engineer for the design of the bridge replacement. Mr. Valenzuela was responsible for design of each substructure and superstructure component as well as the load rating. The bridge is a 130'-0" long, 5-span prestressed flat slab panels with concrete topping on pile bent supports over Taylor Creek. He was also in charge of plans production and post design coordination.

SR 91 over CR 561 Emergency Repairs Design Build, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise, Lake County, Florida – On this emergency fast track project, Mr. Valenzuela served as project engineer for the design of the superstructure replacement. This bridge sustained extensive fire damage to the center span superstructure. He was responsible for design of slabs, bearings, details and independent design of prestressed AASHTO beams. Mr. Valenzuela also coordinated with the contractor Cone and Graham, Turnpike Enterprise and various fabricators and sub consultants to collaboratively have the bridge open to traffic in only 10 days from notice to proceed, 1 week ahead of schedule.

Rum Road Over Parrot Creek, FDOT District Three, Holmes County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela was the design engineer responsible for design of each substructure and superstructure component as well as load rating of this bridge. This project was an Emergency Fast Track project in which the existing Timber Structure was washed out by flooding. The bridge is a 160'-0" long, 4-span cast-in-place flat slab on pile bent supports over Parrot Creek. He was also in charge of plans production for each phase of design.

Brackin Road Over Caney Branch, FDOT District Three, Holmes County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela was the design engineer responsible for design of each substructure and superstructure component as well as load rating of this bridge. The bridge is a 35'-0" long single span cast-in-place flat slab on pile bent supports over Caney Branch. He was also In charge of plans production for each phase of design.

SR 417 Curved Girder Erection Scheme, FDOT District Five, Seminole County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as the Project Engineer for the erection scheme for a heavily curved steel bridge for the contractor as part of the SR 417/International Parkway Interchange near Sanford, FL. Juan provided the design of five separate steel girder design models to analyze the stresses for each pair of girders during the erection and the deck pour. He designed the temporary towers to ensure the girders would not be overstressed, provide better stability during the incremental erection steps, and to control the deflections to allow for better fit-up of the cross bracing. The bridge included a 200' span with a 45 degree skew and a radius of 500 feet.

PGA Blvd. Over Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, Palm Beach County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as the design project engineer for this ramp replacement project. The project consists of dual unsymmetrical spans over the Turnpike. His responsibilities included design of prestressed girders, geometry, slabs, pier and end bent designs along with the design of temporary critical sheet pile wall systems using a Combi-Wall type in accordance with the newly prescribed FDOT LRFD method, quality assurance checks and plans preparation. The bridge is a 90 degree 245 foot long structure with use of Florida I-Beam girders founded on an intermediate pier and two end bents.

Hoagland Blvd. Over Shingle Creek, Osceola County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela was the design engineer responsible for design of each substructure and superstructure component as well as load rating of this bridge replacement. The bridge is a 126'-0" long, 6-span cast-in-place flat slab on pile bent supports over Shingle Creek. He was also in charge of plans production for each phase of design.

US 1 & Barnes Boulevard, Brevard County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as project engineer on this Miscellaneous Structures Project. He was responsible for the design of the DMS sign mounted on a tri-chord cantilever as well as the fatigue analysis due natural wind, galloping and truck gust effects per the LTS manual for this structure. Also as part of this project the drilled shaft foundations and corresponding anchor bolt embedment design along with the design of several mast arms was completed.

Old Lake Wilson Road, Osceola County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as project engineer on this design project. He was responsible for the design of hundreds of feet of permanent and temporary-critical steel sheet pile wall systems both anchored and cantilevered using the newly developed LRFD design method.

Bus Stop Shelter Designs for LYNX, City of Winter Park and Other Various Clients – Mr. Valenzuela was responsible for implementing the latest structural code changes for the 2010 Florida Building Code and incorporating the wind load provisions from ASCE 7-10 to the design of the 6x9, 6x13, 10x10 and the 15x15 bus shelters. He designed the foundation of the 6x13 shelter to minimize right of way requirements and allow the shelter to fit sites with a smaller overall footprint.

SR 429 from Binion to SR 441, Orange County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as design engineer responsible for the design of internal and external bracing, connections along with splices for the Ramp E1 curved steel box-girder structure in which complex warping and distortional effects were addressed. The design was in accordance with LFD, AASHTO LRFD and AISC LRFD. He was also responsible for the quality assurance checks of the end bents, piers, foundations and piles. Mr. Valenzuela served as project engineer responsible for the design of Florida U-Beams for a nine span roughly 1000 feet long viaduct alternative.

Lake Underhill Road West Ramp, OOCEA, Orlando, Florida – On this OOCEA project, Mr. Valenzuela served as project engineer for a three-span continuous steel I-girder bridge. The project is a braided ramp intertwined with SR 408 EB Toll 2. He was responsible for design of end bents, slabs, steel girders and details. Mr. Valenzuela also designed integral straddle and hammerhead pier caps, associated details, and led plan/drawing production and post design services. Mr. Valenzuela designed temporary critical sheet pile walls and anchorage systems for the entire 253 C project from Conway Rd to Oxalis Drive.

SR 408 from Crystal Lake to Conway Road, OOCEA, Orlando, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as project engineer for this project which had a total of nine concrete and steel bridge structures, including widenings, new ramp structures and a pedestrian bridge crossing Lake Underhill. The concrete and steel Lake Underhill bridges included 28 spans and a total of 1,700 feet across the lake. Mr. Valenzuela designed steel plate-girders, steel details, superstructure and end bent components for the 139 ft. simple-span eastbound ramp bridge over Crystal Lake Drive. He also designed AASHTO beams, end bents, deck slabs and performed bridge load ratings for the new and existing superstructures for several other bridges on the project.

I-4 / SR 46 Interchange Improvements, Seminole County, Florida – This project included the design of two long span DMS sign trusses over I-4 for FDOT D-5. The trusses were analyzed for fatigue loads and required separate 3-D modeling for the full wind case and the fatigue design cases. The project also included the design of catwalks and hanging the signs from the back tri-chord. Mr. Valenzuela served as SR Project Engineer and performed the design.

HEFT Resurfacing on Florida’s Turnpike, Broward & Miami Dade County – This project consisted of resurfacing a portion of the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike (HEFT). The project included the design of new traffic railings and approach slab replacements. Mr. Valenzuela served as the project engineer for this project.

SR 528 Widening, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, Orlando, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela served as the project engineer for this complex widening project. The project consists of multiple bridge widenings and replacements along SR 528. His responsibilities included design of AASHTO prestressed girders, geometry, slabs and sheet pile walls, quality assurance checks and plan preparation. The bridge sites his work was performed on include; John Young Parkway, a 290 feet four-span skewed AASHTO girder bridge; McCoy Road, a 207 feet three-span skewed AASHTO girder bridge; and International Drive, a 177 feet two-span tangent AASHTO girder bridge. All bridges were widened to the interior and exterior in both traffic directions.

SR 482 Widening, FDOT District Five, Orlando, Florida - Mr. Valenzuela served as the project engineer for this widening project. The project consists of multiple bridge widenings on curved and tangent horizontal curves and a bridge replacement along SR 482 (Sand Lake Rd.). His responsibilities included design of AASHTO prestressed girders, pier and end bent foundations, geometry, slabs and miscellaneous details, quality assurance checks and plan preparation. The bridge sites his work was performed on include; the Kirkman Rd. and Sand Lake Rd. Interchange where the four bridges were widened to the north with spans varying from 4 to 6. His work also includes the design and quality assurance checks of all components for a SR 482 bridge replacement over Shingle Creek which consists of three AASHTO prestressed girder spans on pile bents.

Ormond Beach Crossings Over FEC Railroad Tracks, Palm Coast Holdings, Volusia County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela was the project engineer responsible for design checking of structure components of these two Ormond Beach Crossings bridges. The bridges are 110’-0” simple span AASHTO Type IV girder bridges on pile bent supports over FEC Railroad Tracks.

SR 80 Over Okaloacoochee Branch, FDOT District One, Polk County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela was the design engineer responsible for the design of all substructure and superstructure components of these SR 80 twin 90-degree bridges for FDOT District One. The bridges are AASHTO girder bridges on pile bent supports and span over a channel waterway and wetlands.

Royal Palms Parkway Over Bellaire Canal and Lehigh Spur Canal, Palm Coast Holdings, Flagler County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela was the design engineer responsible for the design of all substructure and superstructure components of these canal crossings. The Bellaire Canal crossing is two span AASHTO beam bridge on pile bents. The Lehigh Spur Canal crossing is a curved and highly skewed two span AASHTO beam bridge on pile bents.

Turnpike Beulah to SR 50, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, Orange County, Florida – Mr. Valenzuela was the project engineer for this multiple bridge replacement and widening of Florida’s Turnpike. He designed the Avalon Road Bridge and all related structures, a simple span 114-foot AASHTO girder bridge with phased construction on pile bent supports. Mr. Valenzuela also designed the Winter Garden Vineland Bridge, which is a 206 feet two-span AASHTO girder bridge on an aesthetic multiple column intermediate pier and pile bents. He evaluated multiple alternatives including steel plate girders, rolled shape beams along with various substructure pile alternatives.
