Ops Academy, We in Michigan are looking at fiber sharing opportunities. I ask the following questions looking for any response or input from the group. 1. Do you currently have fiber as part of your network that you own? 2. If you do, is there currently an avenue that you use to share that fiber with other public agencies both within the same organization and outside of your organization? 3. How do you handle the fiber sharing agreements both within and outside of your organization? 4. Do you charge an installation fee, usage fee, maintenance fee, etc., for them using your fiber network? 5. Do you restrict their bandwidth usage per month? 6. Have you had the fiber "hit" or damaged and if so how do you handle that with those partners? 7. Do you currently have markers in place where your fiber is to signify that there is fiber in the ground, who owns it and who to contact since it is all underground and can't be seen? If so what type of markers do you use and where do you get them from? 8. Do you have any sample documents / agreements for fiber sharing or details for fiber marking that you would be willing to share? Thanks. Jason Jason Gutting

Jason, Hope all is well. My response is shown in red and is tagged with your questions. Let me know if you have more questions. Dennis Motiani

Ops Academy, We in Michigan are looking at fiber sharing opportunities. I ask the following questions looking for any response or input from the group. 1. Do you currently have fiber as part of your network that you own? Yes 2. If you do, is there currently an avenue that you use to share that fiber with other public agencies both within the same organization and outside of your organization? Yes 3. How do you handle the fiber sharing agreements both within and outside of your organization? NJDOT IT shares it without any agreement and other outside agencies (NJ Turnpike) through an MOA. 4. Do you charge an installation fee, usage fee, maintenance fee, etc., for them using your fiber network? No. They use ours and we use theirs, so there is no need for fees. 5. Do you restrict their bandwidth usage per month? No, we did assign fibers within the bundle, so they can use as much bandwidth on that fiber as they want. 6. Have you had the fiber "hit" or damaged and if so how do you handle that with those partners? Yes. As the Turnpike has monetary data flowing on these cables, it is in their best interest to fix the break as soon as possible. Turnpike therefore has a contract to fix all breaks that occur on the fibers that have mixed use through a contractor. 7. Do you currently have markers in place where your fiber is to signify that there is fiber in the ground, who owns it and who to contact since it is all underground and can't be seen? If so what type of markers do you use and where do you get them from? yes we do have markers, they could be in form of a sticker that can be placed on a cabinet or plastic/fiberglass stakes. These markers have our ITS maintenance phone number printed on them. 8. Do you have any sample documents / agreements for fiber sharing or details for fiber marking that you would be willing to share? I will forward it to you either tomorrow or Wednesday. Thanks. Jason
