Facts about Fast Food

Many fast food chains produce some sort of chart detailing nutritional information. This chart tells people how much fat, protein, and carbohydrates are in their food. It will also show how many calories are in food.

Protein, fat, and carbohydrates are good. Calories are good. All have to be in the right amounts.

According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) an average person needs around 2000 calories a day. An adult woman usually needs fewer calories than adult men. Active people need more calories than sedentary people. Teenage boys consume the most because of their rapid growth rate. Children need fewer calories than adults.

Let’s assume 2000 calories is our baseline; our goal. The FDA of the United States uses this amount when reporting information on its food labels.

The recommended maximum for fat intake in grams is 65 grams, for someone who consumes 2000 calories.

Use the Nutrition Calculator to answer the following questions. Include the food items, and the numbers and units I ask for:

What is a meal you would eat (normally) at McDonalds? If you don’t eat at McDonalds, then what might a person “like you” choose?

What is the number of calories in this meal?

What is the total amount of fat in the meal in grams?

What vitamins and minerals are in your meal, in percent daily value?

What is a meal combo (beverage, entrée or sandwich, and side) that you yourself could eat, that has the most amount of calories? Tell me the items and the total number of calories.

What is a meal combo (beverage, entrée or sandwich, and side) that you yourself could eat, that has the most amount of fat? Tell me the items and the total grams of fat.

What is a meal combo (beverage, entrée or sandwich, and side) that you yo

rself could eat, that has the least amount of calories? Tell me the items and the total number of calories.

Put together a meal of low fat, low calorie items from many different areas of the menu. Make it a filling meal, perhaps one that is too large for you to eat. Do not go over 1000 calories. Tell me the items and the total number of calories.

Compare McDonalds to another large fast food chain with an online nutrition guide. Compare similar sized or priced items on their menu for serving size or cost and report on the two meals’ nutritional information. You could use a table:

Meal A: / Meal B:
Calories
Grams of Fat

Alternately, you could present information in either a Word Document or PowerPoint comparing and contrasting similar sized and priced meals from different chances.
