1st commandment

You shall have no other gods.

We should fear, love and trust in God above all things.

2nd Commandment

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

We should fear and love God that we do not use his name to curse, swear, lie, or deceive, or use witchcraft, but call upon God’s name in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.

Isaiah 43:11 I even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior.

Gen. 8:21b Every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood.

3rd Commandment

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

We should fear and love God that we do not despise preaching and his Word, but regard it as holy and gladly hear and learn it.

4th Commandment

Honor your father and mother, that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

We should fear and love God that we do not dishonor or anger our parents and others in authority, but honor, serve, and obey them, and give them love and respect.

Matthew 22:37 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

5th commandment

You shall not murder.

We should fear and love God that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor’s money or property, or get it by dishonest dealing, but help him to improve and protect his property and means of income.

6th commandment

You shall not commit adultery.

We should fear and love god that we lead a pure and decent life in words and actions, and that husband and wife love and honor each other.

Eph. 4:22-24 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

The 7th Commandment

You shall not steal.

we should fear and love God that we do not take our neighbor’s money or porperty, or get it by dishonest dealing, but help him to improve and protect his property and means of income.

The 8th Commandment

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

We should fear and love God that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, or give him a bad name, but actions in the kindest possible way.

Hymn 202:1

If God had not been on our side and had not come to aid us,

Our foes with all their pow’r and pride would surely have dismayed us,

For we, his flock, would have to fear the devil’s wolves, both far and near, who rise in might against us.

Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

Ephs. 3:20a Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.

The 9th commandment

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.

We should fear and love God that we do not scheme to get our neighbor’s inheritance or house, or obtain it by a show of right, but do all we can to help him keep it.

The 10th Commandment

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, workers,animals, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

We should fear and love God that we do not force or entice away our neighbor’s spouse, workers, or animals, but urge them to stay and do their duty.

Ps. 51:17 My sacrifice, O God, is[a] a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

Romans 3:20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

The Conclusion to the Commandments-Part 1

(What does God say about all these commandments?)

He says, “I the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

Conclusion -Part 2-What does this mean?

God threatens to punish all who transgress these commandments. Therefore we should fear his anger and not disobey what he commands.

But he promises grace and every blessing to all who keep these commandments. Therefore we should love and trust in him and gladly obey what he commands.

Ps. 124:8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,the Maker of heaven and earth.

Prov. 22:6 Start children off on the way they should go,

and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Hymn 441:1,3

1.O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.

3. Before the hills in order stood or earth received its frame,

The Institution of Baptism-First: What is Baptism?

Baptism is not just plain water, but it is water used by God’s command and connected with God’s Word.

Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
