ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- the Following Are Essential Functions of the Job but Are Not

HMS Ferries, Inc. is looking for chiefmate for our Governor's Island Passenger/Auto Ferryoperation in New York City, NY. Qualified candidates will be responsible for the supervision and direction of all deck activities. The chiefmate perform duties related to passenger safety, passenger service, vessel operations and vessel maintenance; assume direct control of cargo operations (i.e. loading and unloading of passengers, vehicles and other equipment); manage vessel safety programs and related procedures. This position will also support the Vessel Master as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- The following are essential functions of the job but are not all-inclusive.

  • Participate in navigation, piloting and ship handling as part of the Bridge Team.
  • Perform all duties associated with the position, particularly Station Bill responsibilities and all aspects of passenger safety.
  • Know and adhere to the Company SMS (Safety Management System). Ensure that subordinate personnel do as well.
  • Provide a lead role in crew vessel training and safety drills.
  • Assist with all vessel operations.
  • Oversee deck operations including loading and discharging of passengers, vehicles, equipment and cargo.
  • Monitor vessel drafts and Loading Marks.
  • Respond as assigned to all vessel emergencies – act as “on scene leader”
  • Actively engage passengers to provide outstanding service.
  • Ensure maintenance and service of all safety and deck equipment.
  • Organize projects for maintenance periods.
  • Maintain vessel cleanliness and appearance to the highest standards.
  • Help perform vessel maintenance in accordance with phased maintenance schedules as directed.
  • Inspect all areas of the vessel for environmental, safety and health deficiencies on a regular schedule. Report all deficiencies to vessel Master. Carry out corrective actions to the maximum extent possible.
  • Help maintain logs and records.
  • Assist with routine reports as directed.
  • Monitor uniform standards of Deckhands.
  • Know and adhere to the contents of the Employee Handbook and adhere to those requirements.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the vessel Master.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • 5 years’ experience as licensed mate or master demonstrating the ability to handle increasing levels of responsibility
  • U.S.C.G. license endorsed as mate of Motor Vessels of at least 1600 gross tons upon Inland Waters with required endorsements. (Can be any mate.)
  • Red Cross First Aid and CPR
  • TWIC Card
  • Working knowledge of deck equipment
  • Advanced Seamanship including: safety equipment, line handling, knots & splices and small boat handling
  • Ability to effectively interact with the public; strong customer service skills
  • Strong organizational, communications and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to develop and execute innovative solutions to crew management and morale
  • Ability and interest to learn and improve
  • Must wear Company uniform and required safety equipment
  • Maintain compliance with USCG licensing requirements including physical standards
  • Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the US Coast Guard including butnot limited to pre-employment, random, and post-accident testing

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Mental- Ability to determine safe or unsafe conditions. Process calculations occasionally.
  • Use of Senses- Observe for safety. Vision correctible to 20/40. Full color vision, no night blindness full range of all limbs
  • Environment- Outside conditions, extreme temperatures. Marine operation subject to varied wake and motion.
  • Physical- Ability to carry materials weighing upwards of 75 lbs. to include hoses, garbage, paint and other. Ability to work on scaffold and ladders. Continuous speaking, hearing, seeing, depth perception, and color vision. Frequent standing, walking, and sitting. Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling.
