Dessert

Choose items from the dessert menu.

  1. Identify which flags show equal or unequal parts. For flags that have been divided into equal-sized parts, name them and create a fraction question about the flag that a classmate can answer.
  2. Using one of the recipes provided, convert the ingredient list into pictures without using numbers.
  3. Create a naming fractions crossword puzzle.

Side Dishes

Choose at least two side dishes.

Dessert

Choose items from the dessert menu.

  • Develop a set of manipulatives that you can use to show or teach ordering fractions.
  • Create a cube for a fraction of your choice. Each side should have a different equivalent fraction for the fraction you choose.
  • Create a set of concentration cards for matching equivalent fractions. You can use pictures, words, or symbols.
  • Create a how-to video that would teach other students how to put fractions in order from least to greatest.

Teacher Notes

  1. Choose three to six independent practice problems for the student to complete. The student will then complete the problem solving section of the day’s lesson. Have an answer key available for the student to self-correct his/her work. If they successfully show mastery of the day’s topic, they can move on to the “side dishes.”
  1. Have copies of the Enrichment Master available for the student to complete. Hatchin’ Fractions is a computer game available through Envision.
  1. Have students select from the “dessert menu.” Have materials prepared. See attached list.

Cube Pattern

Ingredients
1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
2 cups (18 ounces) creamy peanut butter (recommended: Skippy)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 1/2 cups (18 ounces) raspberry jam or other jam
2/3 cups salted peanuts, coarsely chopped

Ingredients
Cooking spray
1 (19.50-ounce) box chocolate brownie mix
2 eggs
1/4 cup chocolate milk
1/4 cup canola oil
1 cup chocolate chips, divided
1/2 cup heavy cream
30 caramels (recommended: Kraft)
2 cups shredded coconut, toasted

Ingredients
1 1/4 sticks (10 tablespoons) unsalted butter
1 3/4 cups packed light brown sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch salt
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
About 6 ounces milk chocolate, chopped into small nuggety chunks (or 1 cup chips)
