Interview with a Classmate
DUE: March 1st.

How Communication and Education will Impact Your Future Educational Success

1. Do the interview with your partner who is from another “culture” and take notes, make a recording (with that person’s permission), and then write this report. DUE NOW ON MARCH 1st.!!

2. You will need to develop questions as starters for the conversation to prepare you to learn about this person and how they see the issues that we have been reading about in our Readings in Chapter 3 and 4 of Guidelines.

3. Write the Report with the following sections:

A. Overview: Write an introduction to this report by telling us something about how this interview was for you and for the other person. How easy or difficult it was to ask the questions and have a conversation about culture at the same time as you are trying to communicate? Think about what Barna says about Stumbling Blocks as you write this overview. What was a stumbling block in this communication or what ones did you talk about? How long did you talk? Where were you? If you started in class, did you want more time outside to continue? Did you feel comfortable or awkward? How do you think the other person felt?

B. Report Connected to our Readings in Chapter 3 & 4: Write a report about what you learned from your conversation with this person and the culture they are representing. Talk about this individual’s sense of stumbling blocks to communication or sense of time or experiences in education or reading. Could you tell the difference between these aspects that might be true for this individual and what might be true as representing the culture? Try to make this a coherent overview and not a listing or mechanical record of the answers to your questions. Remember that you don’t have to cover all of the questions and your interview may go in a direction that isn’t represented by our “readings” or the questions we prepared.

C. Conclusion—Your Learning: What have learned from this interview and assignment? Write about the things that you learned from doing this interview that you didn’t know or that will stay with you as an important aspect of communication across cultures. What most surprised you as you communicated this way with your partner? Did this experience give you a better understanding of the person’s culture and challenges in college? Write about what or how this interview experience might influence your learning in the future.

Format: typed, double spaced, 12 point font, 1-3 pages that includes headings for each of the sections above.
