Introduction: Your task and inspiration

  • What is your assignment?
  • How did you get your idea for your design?

My class received an assignment to design a container that would keep an egg safe when dropped from the roof of our school. At first, I was excited, because I love to design things, and I had some great ideas. I was also a little nervous, though, because I didn’t know if my design would be good enough to keep the egg from breaking. I came up for the idea for my design when I was thinking about how we kept our things from breaking when we moved to a new house. I remembered that we wrapped our dishes and cups in bubble wrap and packed them in cardboard boxes. I thought that I could do that with an egg for this experiment.

Materials List

  • 1 raw egg
  • 1 cardboard box from Amazon.com
  • 1 roll of bubble wrap from Staples
  • 1 roll of packing tape from my tool box

Procedure

  1. Roll out a long strip of bubble wrap
  2. Put a raw egg in a plastic bag
  3. Place the plastic bag on one end of the bubble wrap strip
  4. Gently roll the bubble wrap around the egg 8 times, until about the size of a basketball
  5. Secure bubble wrap roll with clear packing tape
  6. Stuff the bubble wrap roll into a cardboard box
  7. Tape the box shut with the packing tape

Conclusion (1 paragraph): The Drop

  • How does your container protect the egg?
  • What do you expect to happen on egg drop day?

The container protects the egg because it is packed with bubble wrap. When the package hits the pavement, all of the tiny bubbles of air should protect the egg from being damaged. The egg is protected by 8 layers of bubble wrap, so that is a lot of little air pockets! I think that I will be pretty nervous on egg drop day. When my container is dropped from the roof, I think I might hold my breath until the box slams onto the blacktop. I really hope I will get to breathe a sigh of relief when I see that the egg is not damaged. I’m expecting to open the box, take off the bubble wrap and see my egg safely cradled in the middle, unharmed.
