EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: there it is!

Marilyn Young from Acton: Our temps reached 50 today also. We need spring!

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: Anyone from the Rochester, NY area?

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: I think it has been so long since we have had real winters, that we are not accoustom to them anymore.

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: Yes,Bringing on Spring would be nice!

Lise Scheuermann from Tipton IA: The Math folks in my department host a Pi Day event where everyone brings a treat related to Pi (or pie, as some would say)!

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: I have relatives in Victor!

Ann Kingsley from NJ: Hi Cecilia and all Rutgers PEMA students!

Liz KOENIG from Marina, Ca: Northern California is in the 70's

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: It's a great place

Betzi Beck: Hi Ann

The edWeb Team: Hi everyone, we'll be starting in a few - just working out some tech issues.

Lynn Scott with edWeb.net: Anyone doing anything special at their school this week for National Maths Day (tomorrow) or Pi Day (Friday) ???

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: hey there! hope you all are enjoying the sunshine :)

Lindsey Simons from PEMA: Hi cecelia

Liz KOENIG from Marina, Ca: We are doing the vector dance in geometry

Linda Hardy from Winslow, AZ: Hello All.

Jackie Lukjanczuk: Hi Cecilia and PEMA friends :)

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: I am having my students figure the circumference of a dessert plate and then serving up pie!

yingying reiter from wi: Hi

Anglea Spencer: Hello! I am brand new! :)

Dana Nistor from Romania: Hi

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: pie and dancing... sounds good to me!

Wayne Watson from Guam: Pi Day Writing Idea: Can I meow? I tried Wednesday by eating fried cat - 3 1 4 1 5 9 2 6 5 3 (# of letters in each word)

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: Nina D--no apostrophe allowed again?

The edWeb Team: Hi all, thanks for your patience! If you're not yet a member of the free Implementing Common Core Standards in Math community, you can join at

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: oh, Wayne!!!!!

Wayne Watson from Guam: How I love a great blueberry pi is another one

Lynn Scott with edWeb.net: Love these ideas - great to be able to share them here. And I must say the pie one sounds good at this point in the day to me!

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: and what is that?

Jane ODonnell from Wallkill NY: Hello Everyone

Brad Bumber from Woodridge: Hello

donna fischer from New Jersey: we make paper chains/bead necklaces/coloring beads on a worksheet, in pattern of pi. Trouble is getting 10 colors of construction paper or beads. Younger kids love this (grades 4-8) Amazingly, 8th graders like this.

Wayne Watson from Guam: so is "Sam, I need a large scientist to juggle until the choir finishes rehearsal"

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: Donna, love that idea... because I love jewelry!

Lynn Scott with edWeb.net: A special welcome to Anglea S and any others who are brand new to our program!

Lise Scheuermann from Tipton IA: one of my favorite lessons when I was a teacher was to have students measure around and across several "round" objects and divide around by across. When they all came up with something close to 3, I'd ask them to be more precise... 3.1? ...more precise... 3.14? Hey we all got 3.14 even though we measured different objects, how could that be? Then we did an Internet search for 3.14 and learned all about it. But it was WAY better than me just telling them 3.14 is some special number.

julie krueger from slcsd: Hi, Julie from UT here

donna fischer from New Jersey: they can also do a frequency table for the first 50 digits of pi and then make bar graphs, pi charts, .... for how often the digit appears.

PatrickGreco from Carteret: Patrick Greco here thanks

donna fischer from New Jersey: also -

Wayne Watson from Guam: Screen share difficulties: well it IS a problem solving workshop :-)

Peggy George from Phoenix AZ: Hi everyone!

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: thanks Donna!

The edWeb Team: Hi, Peggy!

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: To err is human, to really foul things up requires a computer...

Fonda Dortch-Taylor from Somerset: Hello Cecilia!

christine camarda from nj: Lise, that is awesome and definitely WAY better than just "telling" them!

Susan Mascioli from Boston: Signing in!

Monica from Easton: Well said Vicki

Jane ODonnell from Wallkill NY: Pie r squared bring in square pies to square

Lynn Scott with edWeb.net: So true Vicki - glad you understand :)

Jane ODonnell from Wallkill NY: to share

Anglea Spencer: Today mathematically was 3+11=14!

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: Fonda!!! Long time no see :)

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: Don't worry Sara! I am patient! In school technology never works when we are depending on it!

Fonda Dortch-Taylor from Somerset: I'm with you on that one Jane!

Wayne Watson from Guam: angela 3+11=14 factorial???

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: Very good Anglea!

Betzi Beck: Nice Angela, I like that:)

Lynn Scott with edWeb.net: Anyone going to NSTA in Boston in a few weeks?

donna fischer from New Jersey: oh, try 'am I in PI?' at to see if your birthday appears in Pi and where (joy of pi has a string finder, also).

Wayne Watson from Guam: Boston is like 10 time zones away so no

Barbara Haase from Seaford: Hi from Seaford, Long Island, New York!

Lynn Scott with edWeb.net: Love all of these ideas! What a clever group with us today!

Fonda Dortch-Taylor from Somerset: Hello Jennifer!

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: Hi Barbara -- I'm orginally from Bohemia

donna fischer from New Jersey: i am planning to wear my PI-rate shirt - it is a T shirt w/ a big PI dressed with a bandanna, parrot, cutlass and pistol in a belt.

PatrickGreco from Carteret: This is my first time in a webinar hope its good

donna fischer from New Jersey: oh, and a peg leg

Kathleen Diffatte from Saint Paul, MN: Hello from MN. Anyone not have audio or video? Am I the only one?

Wayne Watson from Guam: yep we're clever . . . that's why we get the big money, right?

Marie Immohr from Region#12: I just joined and am finding nothing on my screen....

The edWeb Team: Hi all! If you're just joining us, we're just sorting out some technical issues - thanks for your patience!

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: cool, my birthday appears in the 49713rd spot of pi!!!

Peggy George from Phoenix AZ: so glad the time was correct on my Google calendar today. AZ doesn't use Daylight Saving Time and I always have to double check the week following the time change.

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: You're in for a treat, Patrick

donna fischer from New Jersey: right now the only thing is the main screen showing

Dawn Dibley from Rosemount, MN: Hello!

Dr. Jennifer Jones from Rutgers University: Hello to Lindsey, Christine, Carlie, Briana, Betzi, Fonda, Jackie and Nina! Did I miss anyone?

PatrickGreco from Carteret: thanks when its over can we print

Anne Marie Norgren from Milford, CT: Hello, my name is Anne Marie from Mathnasium in Milford, CT

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: Ann K., Alex

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: The certificate will be e-mailed tomorrow

Wayne Watson from Guam: what is mathnasium?

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: yup :)

Betzi Beck: yes

Dawn Dibley from Rosemount, MN: yes

Anglea Spencer: sure can

Jane ODonnell from Wallkill NY: yes

yingying reiter from wi: yes

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: yes

Anne Marie Norgren from Milford, CT: yes

christine camarda from nj: Every ed-web I've been on I'm told I'll receive a certificate and I've never received ONE

Dr. Jennifer Jones from Rutgers University: Thnx, Cecilia :)

Jo from U.S.A.: yes

EMILY KLUG from Menomonie, WI: Yes and I can see you in the corner of my computer!

donna fischer from New Jersey: a tutoring service (mathnasium) my daughter worked for them

Maria Teresa Melendez Mantilla from Peru: Hi from Peru

Wayne Watson from Guam: hola

Jane ODonnell from Wallkill NY: Technology is a beautiful thing!

The edWeb Team: Join the free Implementing Common Core Standards in Math community on edWeb for invitations to upcoming webinars, access to all of the webinar archives and slides, and for a CE quiz for all of our webinars.

Cynthia Meza from Tx: I have the same issue as Christine Camarda :-/

Jane ODonnell from Wallkill NY: pie day

donna fischer from New Jersey: pi day is also Einstein's birthday

The edWeb Team: Attendees of today's live session will receive their CE certificate within 24 hours to the email you logged in with today.

The edWeb Team: Thank you to our sponsor, ETA hand2mind:

christine camarda from nj: The edWeb Team I never receive certificates

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: USS Enterprise number!

Nina D: Hi PEMA friends

Dr. Jennifer Jones from Rutgers University: Christine, could it have something to do w/franklinboe.org email?

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: Christine are you logging in through your phone? maybe it doesn't recognize that?

christine camarda from nj: it shouldn't. I check my spam filter daily :/

christine camarda from nj: Nope, on my macbook

christine camarda from nj: I get all of the confirmation emails and reminders

Nina D: Just had wierd tech issues, okay now

The edWeb Team: Christine, if you could send an email to our accound we can address it there

christine camarda from nj: Great, thank you

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: remind me where to find the common core document

The edWeb Team: Remember you can maximize your screen for a larger view by clicking the maximize button in the top right hand corner of the page.

Joanna Graziani: Kevin Campana is here too, he was having trouble logging in.

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: thanks Joanna!

Nina D: Think we all did

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: yes, even the presenter had tech issues

Kevin Campana from Judd: I'm now here :)

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: welcome!

Lise Scheuermann from Tipton IA: CCSS standards for Math:

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: thanks

donna fischer from New Jersey: any chance we could get the powerpoints in advance - to have in front of us to take notes? I am always trying to 'combine' my notes into your powerpoint

Betzi Beck: That situation actually happened in my class today while solving word problems.

The edWeb Team: The recording, slides, and chat log for today's webinar will be posted in our free Implementing Common Core Standards in Math community at

Nina D: that is funny because it came up on word problems with my 4th graders today too

donna fischer from New Jersey: i know - i print them off for my files, but it would be easier to take notes directly on them

Linda McCulloch from Canada: Coming from Canada - it is wonderful to hear you using metres in the example!

donna fischer from New Jersey: some webinars do this

Betzi Beck: rather than writing the number model as 42/6=? like all of the others did this student did 6 X ? = 42

The edWeb Team: Donna, we post them within 24 hours of the webinar's conclusion and are unable to provide them prior

donna fischer from New Jersey: okay, thanks anyway

Lise Scheuermann from Tipton IA: I take screenshots and copy paste into a Word doc to take notes on.

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: I used to interchange rows and columns when I was younger... had to get it straight when it came to matrices!

Dawn Dibley from Rosemount, MN: Assignment - bring in pictures of arrays.

christine camarda from nj: I still have issues with rows and columns!

Larry Copes from Minnesota, USA: or columns on houses or other buildings

donna fischer from New Jersey: thanks, Lisa

Joanna Graziani: Many of my students do as well; I even find myself confusing them at itmes too

Wayne Watson from Guam: Roamn columns

Cecilia Arias from Rutgers/NJ: and people sitting in rows in an auditorium/theater

Joanna Graziani: Oh those are good comparisons

Wayne Watson from Guam: Roman columns

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: Remainders can then be connected to fractions

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: mixed numbers

Dr. Jennifer Jones from Rutgers University: some think of "discarding" it

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: Yes

Ann Kingsley from NJ: We do a lot of work with interpreting remainders.

christine camarda from nj: It's just like telling my left from my right - I will forever need to make the "L" with my hands to see which one is my left and which is right. My brain just doesn't remember this without me pulling the information from a connection

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: you did great!

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: ..with my name

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: lol

Lise Scheuermann from Tipton IA: call it "the remaining cookie" instead of "extra" or "left over" and they'll get the vocabulary?

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: Yes, Lisa

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: Lise

Rocio Aguilar from Costa Rica: then they think about extra meaning throw it away lol

Kevin Campana from Judd: We do a lot of that in 4th grade. Check outside my room, you'll see some work groups did on certain problems that involved that. It takes a lot of practice and seeing examples

Wayne Watson from Guam: rounding error :-)

Jane ODonnell from Wallkill NY: unless it is an extra person

Vicki Petilli from Victor, NY: Like the bus example from last session

PatrickGreco from Carteret: im teaching special ed 5th grade and remainders are hard concept . I try to relate to what they do at lunch when they share their sandwhich or cookie
