ESL Categorization Charts

Third - Fifth Grade

These charts are used to categorize elementary students or middle school students whose language survey indicates a language other than Spanish. i.e. Vietnamese, Korean etc.

Note: Once a student has scored F/FES on the IPT I test, No further testing is needed.

If on Initial Classification, a student scores at Level A, B, C, D or E the student is LEP and is served in the ESL program.

*If on Initial Classification a student scores at Level F and has scored on the reading and language arts section of a TEA approved norm-referenced measure at his or her grade at or above the 40th percentile (§89.1225.f2), he/she becomes a BE 8N, Non-LEP, and is not served in the ESL program.

NOTE:

  • For ESL students that do not speak Spanish, (in third through fifth grade) they attend ESL lessons conducted by the bilingual teacher. Once a student is identified as ESL, a student may not be exited from ESL lessons in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, or First Grade. The student can be exited at the end of Third Grade if he/she meets exit criteria. [19 TAC 89.6 (I)].
  • If a student enters your campus after January 1, please use a spring test (form F) and use the spring classification. If student scores F/FES, then student is an 8N. Also students that enter and qualify after January 1, do not test in the spring.
