1.Amount of Award: An annual sum of at least $5,000 and up to $10,000 may be awarded to a candidate or sums thereof may be awarded to a number of candidates. The monies shall be awarded directly to the successful research candidate(s). The assistantship will not cover indirect costs.
2.Period of Award: The period of the award shall be for one year. A successful candidate may re-apply in the competition in a following year. The award shall be for 12 months and payment shall be made in two installments. Completion and publication of research sponsored by the AABP is important. 75% of the award will be issued as soon as winners are announced at the Annual Conference. The remaining 25% will be granted when the report is accepted for publication by the AABP in the Bovine Practitioner or another peer-reviewed journal.
3.Eligibility: A candidate shall be a graduate veterinarian, an AABP member and registered in a masters or doctoral program at an accredited North American veterinary college (school), a college with a veterinary science department, or a candidate shall be a North American bovine practitioner and AABP member conducting a scientific research project. Students enrolled at an accredited North American veterinary college (school) who are pursuing a concurrent masters or doctoral degree and are student AABP members are also eligible. Tenured faculty are ineligible for this assistantship.
4.Research Topics: Research topics shall be in the general field of bovine health and management.
5.Selection Criteria: The research award shall be on a competitive basis. Selection criteria for the AABP Research Assistantship include the applicant's qualifications and experience, the justification and relevance to the concerns of industry, the clarity of objectives and probability of completing the research, methodology and scientific merit, budget, and site suitability for proposed research.
6.Reports: With the initial application, the candidate shall report on any work initiated or completed that is related to the proposal. The recipient shall report on work plans and the extent to which objectives were achieved six months after the first award payment. Upon receipt of the mid-term progress report, the second payment shall be made. The recipient shall submit a final report upon completion of the research project. The report should be written in a format for publication in the Bovine Practitioner or Proceedings. The recipient may be requested to present their research data at the annual AABP conference.

7.Selection Committee: The AABP Research Committee shall receive and appraise all applications for the assistantship. The chairperson shall recommend the selected applicant(s) to the Board. The AABP Board of Governors shall award the assistantship funds.
8.Method of Application: Applications shall be made to the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, P.O. Box3610.
9.Application Forms: A candidate shall complete an APPLICATION FOR AN AABP RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP form. Please use the spaces provided on the application form and refrain from having appended protocol material.
10.Deadline Date: Completed application forms must be received by February 1. Each applicant should review the standard AABP Research Assistantship Evaluation Form as presented on page 10. The candidate should complete the name, address and title section of the form.
11.Method of Evaluation: Each application submitted will be evaluated on a standard format as presented on page 10 of this document.
12.Notification: Candidates will be notified of the Committee's decision by July 1.
13.Presentation of Award: Public presentation of the award and a check for 75% of the funds allocated will occur at the Annual AABP Conference in September.

Conciseness and clarity in the proposal can significantly influence the evaluation of the application. Use letter quality print and single-spaced typing. Condensed type is unacceptable.
TITLE:
The title should be brief, but as descriptive as possible, as it is used when lists of awards are published.
SIGNATURES:
The original must be signed by the applicant. The signature confirms the acceptance of the conditions outlined in the Information Document and that space and basic facilities for carrying out the research will be provided.
PROGRESS REPORT:
The applicant should pay particular attention to the section 'Reports' in the Information Document.
