III.Course (Catalog) Description

Course emphasizes development of critical thinking skills using mathematical language and notation appropriately to communicate ideas and solve a variety of problems. The course focuses on increasing mathematical knowledge upon which the elementary curriculum is based with a deeper conceptual understanding of the following topics; sets, real numbers, number theory, functions, statistics and probability.

IV.Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply mathematical reasoning in a variety of routine and non-routine problem solving situations involving sets, real numbers, number theory, functions, basic statistics and probability.
  1. Identify, create and model mathematical representations, ideas and concepts using mathematical language and notation to solve problems with real numbers including, sets, number theory, functions, basic statistics and probability.
  1. Explain and connect the key elements of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics to the course content of sets, real numbers, number theory, functions, basic statistics and probability.
  1. Recognize and demonstrate appropriate use of technologies and tools, such as calculators and computers.

V. Academic Integrity

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct.

This code prohibits:

• cheating

Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years. Details of the Code of Academic Conduct can be found in the Student Handbook.

VI. Outline of Topics

1. Problem Solving: Problem solving procedures and strategies

2. Sets: Basic set concepts, operation on sets, and applications of sets.

3. Real Numbers: Arithmetic operations as subsets of real numbers and properties of the real numbers.

4. Number Theory: Tests for divisibility, greatest common factor and last common multiple.

5. Functions: A variety of special functions, their graphs, and applications.

6. Statistics: Statistical graphs, measures of central tendency and variation, and the normal distribution.

7. Probability: Probability, experiments, odds, conditional probability, expected value and simulation.

VII. Methods of Instruction

Discussion, collaborative teamwork, lecture videos and powerpoints, pencasts, and e-text. This is an online class.

VIII. Course Practices Required

Homework, quizzes, class discussions, and teamwork will be required. Therewill be two exams thatmust be taken on campus. If you are out of the area, arrange exam proctoring by going to the "Courses" tab page in MyOakton, where you will find a link to the off-campus testing guidelines under the "Online Learning Resources" news box.

X. Methods of Evaluating Student

Grading Scale:

100% - 90%A

89% - 80% B

79% - 70%C

69% - 60%D

59% & belowF

Your grade will be comprised of:

Quizzes:20%

Discussions:10%

Teamwork:10%

Exams: 60% (30% each)

Quizzes: After reading the text and completing all the chapter homework with a minimum score of 90%, take the chapter quizzes. The homework does not count as a grade, but it is a prerequisite for the quizzes. The quizzes have specific due dates. Past due quizzes receive a score of ZERO. You may complete any work ahead of schedule, which is strongly recommended. Before the due date you may re- take a quiz once to improve your score. Only the higher quiz score will be recorded.

Discussions:Each week from week 3 through week 10, I will post a question/topic within a new discussion thread. Using the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ website, to the post before Thursday at 10pm. Make sure you read the responses from other studentsbefore you post. Youwill not receive credit for a response that is the same or nearly the same as anotherstudent. If you properly respond to 4 out of the 8 discussions, you will earn 100%, 3 earns 90%, 2earns80%, 1 earns 70%, 0 earns 0%. You will be responsible forreading, understanding, and knowing the content of these posts as they will be included as questions on the exams.

Teamwork:You will be assigned to a team responsible for researching a specified topic related to teaching mathematics. Teams will determine the manner in which the work will be completed, composed and communicated. (Check out “Document Sharing” for details)

Exams: You are required to come to campus to take two exams. You may take them any time before their due dates. Make sure you bring your calculator and picture ID (driver’s license, etc.) to either Testing Center.

DIRECTIONS FOR COMPLETING COURSE WORK:

  1. READ TEXT

Begin by clicking on the Multimedia Library, then select the chapter and section you want to view. Check “Select All” under the media type. Click “find now”. View the section videos and PowerPoint presentation before you enter and read the multimedia textbook. As you read each section you can view classroom videos and practice by completing “now try this” problems. The answers are in the back of the text.

  1. HOMEWORK

Click on “Homework” and select the section you want to complete. Complete your work using the help buttons to the right of each problem. You must work and re-work problems until you score at least 90%. Homework at 90% is a prerequisite for taking a section quiz.

  1. QUIZ

Click on “Quizzes and Tests” and select the chapter(s) you want to complete. Remember, you must have earned 90% or higher on the homework (on-time) in order to take a quiz. Your quiz score will become ZERO if not taken by the due date. You can complete homework and quizzes (including re-takes) any time before the due date.

  1. RE-TAKE QUIZZES

If you are not satisfied with your quiz grade you may re-take the quiz once before the due date. Your higher score will be taken for a grade. If you have trouble understanding your errors - get help (instructor, tutors, videos, textbook, etc.). Do not retake the quiz until you feel reasonably certain that you understand everything.
