Lesson 7

Willful Ignorance

2 Peter 2:20-22

False teachers: 1.snakes are in the shallow water and if you are only in the shallow water of Scripture- watch out

Bring it in secretly- alongside the Truth

2.Insolent manner- they are never under submission of anyone who disagrees with them

3.springs without water- impotent, shallow messages… Why? V.20-22- never saved

v.20- escaped- to flee- aorist puntilliar- happened in the past; apo =preposition- person willingly doing something (vs. epo = driven away);

willingly walk/ fled away from the defilements of the world;

by the knowledge = IN the knowledge – they had a fullness of knowledge

Repentance doesn’t save anyone. It must be accompanied with FAITH.

There was an outward purity that wasn’t balanced with an internal faith that is evidenced in obedience to “their Lord”

1Th1:9- we must turn to someone, turn life over to someone, embracing someone; Lordship issue

Only faith can take the world out of someone; anyone can themselves out of the world

Entangled = interwoven w/ world à took them over è Not true believers; aorist passive- something that was already there and entangled them

Overcome = present tense, middle voice = continually overcome, not even trying to get out

1 John 3- A Christian does not remain in habitual sin- 1Jo2- ; Heb- sin that besets, this happens to all

believers

Pigs/ dogs = most detestable animals to the Jews

Willfully ignorant of judgment of God and Christ’s 2nd coming-

Know facts but conveniently chosen to ignore them in order to get another result in their lives

Vs.

2P3:1-2- Word of God is a sure Word- true believer willingly lets someone remind them of the truth; a righteous man is always open to reproof

Jude18- mockers/ scoffers: 13 times- only 1 time not used to mock Jesus (Luke 14) à

2Jo7- deny His 1st Coming, obviously won’t acknowledge His 2nd Coming

following after = to be committed to, devoted entirely to his own desires (2P2:10- indulge the flesh) vs. Peter being a bondservant- chosen to be a slave of Christ; are there evidences in my life that I am devoted to others à 2 Cor 11:23-27- marks of Paul’s servanthood- his life spoke of his faith-pursuing and devoted to the desires of God

What is it they are devoted to that would cost them if they shared the truth?

2P3:10- ignore this truth because it will cost you everything

Genesis 1-11- lay the foundation of all faith and so here is where the false teachers attack- the fundamentals-you can deny sin if you deny these chapters

Gen 3 = creature without his Creator;

Gen 7- God said the earth will never again be judged by flood, but will be destroyed by fire; God holds the world together with His WORD, He spoke and He destroyed with His WORD, He will SPEAK again and things will be destroyed again.

2P3:7 - the fact that there are false teachers here now points to the fact that there will be a judgment

Change morally on the inside (through faith) NOT just the outside
