Partnership in Management Education program – Winter 1996
This grant-funded program was organized between the University of Washington Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) and the Vladivostok State University of Economics (VSUE). The program brought faculty and a librarian from VSUE to UW and also took some UW Business School faculty and the Head of the Business Administration Library, Gordon Aamot, to Vladivostok to foster an exchange of knowledge and ideas on Western business education. My part involved orienting some of the faculty and the librarian to the electronic reference sources we use in the Business Library for doing business research in various areas. I was also responsible for identifying and coordinating the ordering of equipment to be purchased through the grant for the VSUE Library to set up their first CD-ROM network.

I gave two presentations at the conference, the first was a report on advances in library automation and web based library catalogs in the U.S. The second presentation was a seminar on finding, selecting and using web resources for business research. Both presentations were done through a translator.

As part of the program for the annual meeting, I participated in a “search-off” with vendor representatives from Dow Jones Interactive, Ebsco and IAC. We were all given the same set of three sample business questions, the vendor representatives used their respective products to try to answer the questions and I was given the task of tying to answer the same questions using free Web resources.
