Suicide Prevention & ACEs Training and Outreach Specialist

Part Time – Non Exempt

This position is responsible for overseeing and completing some of the community-based activities in the Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition’s strategic plan.

Representative Tasks/Responsibilities

Outreach

  • Become a certified trainer in various suicide prevention and postvention trainings (ex. QPR, ASIST, Mental Health First Aid, NAMI ConnectPostvention)
  • Reach out to community organizations, groups and agencies (ex. schools, nonprofits, businesses, veterans, primary care clinics), to develop and strengthen partnerships with the Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition (JSPC).
  • Coordinate and provide suicide prevention, postvention and Adverse Childhood Experience trainings with selected groups (ex. schools, nonprofits, businesses, veterans, primary care clinics).
  • Carry out new public awareness prevention strategies in coordination with the Public Awareness & Training Committee.
  • Determine targeted groups needing postvention information and training, and provide presentations/trainings to targeted groups.
  • Distribute resource materials, as follow-up from the postvention committee.
  • Assist in recruiting other community members to assist in Coalition Postvention activities.

Public Awareness & Community Education

  • Educate and provide training to the general community about the relationship between trauma and suicide.
  • Provide the Juneau community with education and awareness about suicide warning signs and resources.
  • May maintain, update and enhance all current JSPC public awareness activities including websites, social media accounts, brochures, resource cards, and other information and advertising.
  • May advertise services with a variety of print and audio/visual materials, including public service announcements and social network advertising.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with willing primary care clinics to improve trauma screening, referrals and interventions with primary care, behavioral health and other service organizations and providers.
  • Build better linkage and cohesion between multiple community efforts addressing trauma and suicide prevention.
  • Work with the Juneau School District and Suicide Prevention Program Coordinator to provide the Signs of Suicide training in the middle and high schools.
  • Assist the Juneau School District with implementation of the Alaska Safe Children’s Act.
  • May assist the Suicide Prevention Program Coordinator with trainings related to Sources of Strength.
  • May participate and assist with efforts relating to Raising Our Children with Kindness (ROCK) Juneau.

Administrative Activities

  • Attend and participate in supervision meetings according to JYS policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in public health or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in the prevention field preferred.
  • Current Alaska drivers license and auto insurance per agency standards.
  • Clearance of state and federal background checks.
  • Completion of required trainings according to established timelines and per job class and program assignment.
