DISCIPLINE STUDIES AND TEACHING METHODS – 2016
Information for Bachelor of Teaching students
All Bachelor of Teaching students need to complete a minimum of four subjects (known as a Sub-major or Minor) in a “discipline area” as part of their degree.
Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration requirements state that different teaching methods require different numbers of subjects.
Major: A total of 6 subjects, two subjects at 1stYear level, and a minimum of two subjects at 3rdYear level.
Sub-Major or Minor: A total of 4 subjects with no more than two subjects at 1stYear level.
Part: A total of 2 subjects, normally at 1stYear level.
Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)
All students in the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) need to complete asub-major in one discipline area. Students also have the option to complete a Teaching Method aligned to their discipline area, which will allow them to teach in a Secondary School up to Year10 level.
Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)
Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) students need to choose two Teaching Methods from the table below, as well as completing associated disciplinespecificsub-major, or sub-major and part studies.
Bachelor of Teaching (Outreach and Community Education)
Bachelor of Teaching (Outreach and Community Education) students must choose an additionalTeaching Method, and associated discipline specific sub-major, or sub-major and part studies from Drama, English, EAL, Mathematics, or Science.
Discipline specific subjects are offered through other Schools across the University. Pre-requisites, classroom requirements, and learning resources will be as specified by the relevant area.
TEACHING METHODS – Bachelor of Teaching Programs
In the 3rd or 4th year, students wanting to teach a Method at a Secondary School will need to select their Teaching Method subject/s from the below table. Students choose two Method Cluster subjects. Valid combinations are 2 methods in Cluster A, 2 methods in Cluster B, or 1 method from each Cluster.
