Communication Skills – Effective professional Interactions
Appraisal and Revalidation
Sessional GPs are reminded of the requirement to undergo annual appraisal. If you have not had an appraisal you should contact the Primary Care Trust with which you are registered and request an appraisal. Evidence collected for appraisal is likely to be vital in helping GPs pass revalidation. Further information about the framework for revalidation should be known soon. I will be organising an event on appraisal and revalidation as soon as practicable after the publication of the CMO’s report.
Communication skills training
Revalidation is likely to include a requirement to undergo communication skills training (as an option along with patient surveys, etc). This kind of seminar is also vital in refreshing skills and acquiring new ones and trying to tackle common challenges in clinical practice such as time management, trying to influence health behaviours etc. There are a number of course on offer and many still have places.
Please see the attached flyer on courses being offered in the spring by Effective professional interactions :

The RCGP suggests that, for revalidation, GPs should be able to demonstrate training or reflection in communication skills within the last 5 years – e.g. through videos of consultations or a Calgary Cambridge course. These courses offer you a skills update -to improve your clinical practice and to prepare you for revalidation.
They are run by Effective Professional Interactions Ltd, designed with the specific needs of GPs and revalidation in mind. The sessions are facilitated by Dr Malcolm Thomas, who has a background in General Practice and GP education
About the courses
· Evidence about skills that matter and evidence about how learners improve.
· We use a blend of facilitated group discussion, group exercises, brief presentations and, especially, skills rehearsal
· We use a balance of learning styles – theory, reflection and activity.
· You will receive a workbook & other tools to use during & after the session; adding to your CPD portfolio and providing evidence for revalidation. No video needed.
INCREASE YOUR EFFECTIVENESS [and reduce your risk] – skills that can reduce your clinical and medico legal risk, as well as promoting more effective use of your time.
OPEN DISCLOSURE – WHEN THINGS GO WRONG – the National Patient Safety Agency advises “Open Disclosure” training for all clinicians. A framework to handle conversations with patients when we have to tell the patient that something went wrong.
PROMOTING EFFECTIVE BEHAVIOUR CHANGE – conversing with patients re behaviour change can be frustrating. Motivational Interviewing has much to offer us in this session.
INTENSIVE COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS [THE CALGARY CAMBRDIGE FRAMEWORK] – the gold standard for skills development is personal review of performance, with feedback and rehearsal. It is what sports coaches do. It works - and it is what we do on this course.
Book early – there is a limit of 18 places per session (and a limit of 8 for the intensive course)

Time out for sessional GPs
9th February 2006
Tomlinson teaching Centre, Newcastle General Hospital
Westgate Road, Newcastle- booking required
9.30-10.45Please note there are two parallel sessions. / Co-mentoring- Dr Gail Young Primary Care Choices
Co-mentoring is a form of mentoring based on a model similar to co-counselling, where two or sometimes three people meet together on a regular basis and use protected time to ‘mentor’ one another. This involves providing good active listening, facilitatory questioning, support and challenge. This has been running in Newcastle for the past seven years. An advantage of co-mentoring is that it is a reciprocal, non-hierarchical model; no money changes hands – we are giving and taking time with one another. It provides opportunities for one to one mentoring as well as meeting in a bigger group from time to time, to catch up and get new ideas from one another. Most of us find co-mentoring helpful in a number of ways: clarifying and exploring difficulties at work; looking at ways of solving problems; discussing patients in depth; complaints; practice relationships; keeping the home/work balance healthy.
