Keynote Begins at 8:30

Were you unable to attend last fall’s conference? MSCA is continuing its outreach to school counselors throughout the state by offering this one-day conference, which will highlight some of the most well received sessions from the fall.

Keynote Speaker: Paul Hernandez, PhD

“The Pedagogy of Real Talk”

Dr. Hernandez was an at-risk student who dropped out of school only to go on to get several college degrees, including a PhD. Currently the Chief Diversity Officer at Lansing Community College, he is best known for his successful program, “College 101”.

In this keynote, Dr. Hernandez will discuss components of his book, The Pedagogy of Real Talk: Engaging, Teaching, and Connecting With Students at Risk. He will guide attendees in identifying what challenges educators face in connecting with students in and out of the classroom and how to enhance those connections to improve the learning process. This session will address the notion of connections by using "Real Talk," a component of the alternative pedagogy, to authentically, yet systematically connect with students. All participants will receive a copy of Dr. Hernandez’s book.
