Please Bring the Following to Rehearsals:

·  Appropriate rehearsal attire (athletic wear and sneakers – no jeans or flip-flops)

·  Equipment (flag, rifle, and/or saber)

·  Guard gloves

·  Large water jug

·  Small, healthy snack

·  Dot book and pen/pencil (for all rehearsals from band camp forward – do not need for summer rehearsals or pre-band camp)

·  A positive attitude (colorguard involves a lot of individual correction, please be welcoming of instruction)

Rehearsal Expectations:

·  The summer rehearsals are not mandatory, but you are expected to attend them if you are in town. You MUST let the staff know if you will be unavailable to make a rehearsal. It is assumed you will be there unless we’re notified otherwise. Failure to let us know will result in an unexcused absence. These summer rehearsals are important because they establish the core of our technique and conditioning for the coming season. It is better that we get the fundamentals solidified in the summer so you can focus your efforts on academics once the school year begins. By attending these summer rehearsals, you will be making the rest of your season significantly easier.

·  Summer rehearsals are fairly casual. We take a lot of short water breaks and will have one longer (~10min.) snack break.

·  Rehearsals will almost always run the full allotted time. Please note that when expecting a ride.

·  Mandatory rehearsals are just that…mandatory. Colorguard is a team activity where everyone is performing the entire show. No one can substitute for you and your role. Choreography and changes thereto are introduced or refined at every rehearsal. Missing these rehearsals should be reserved only for personal illnesses or major life events (wedding, funerals, etc.). School work is not considered an acceptable excuse. Just like for other activities at Yorktown, it is expected that students develop and maintain time management skills.

·  Colorguard is a sport. Please take care of yourself. Eat healthy and exercise. Your show will demand a lot from you both physically and mentally.

·  Please see the marching band handbook for any additional rehearsal expectations.

·  Colorguard is fun. There will be times in August where you will be asking yourself why you committed to such a difficult and challenging activity. You will understand why on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons in October when you perform in front of the home crowds at Yorktown and compete with your fellow band members against other marching bands from across the region. There is no other experience in the world like the one on which you are about to embark. Relax and enjoy.
