International Scholar Information Sheet

Responsibilities of a J-1 Scholar

I have been given printed information on and advised about the following requirements for J-1 scholars.

Report Address Changes to the Office of International Education (OIE).

U.S. federal regulations require all J-1 scholars to report a change of address within 10 days of the address change to the Office of International Education. OIE is required to provide this and other scholar data to the federal government electronically. No other university office is authorized by the federal government to process this data.

Report Departure Date and Reason to OIE

Scholars must notify OIE prior to departing the U.S.

Maintain Adequate Health Insurance

As a J-1 scholar, you agree to maintain adequate health insurance for you and any J-2 dependents. This is a requirement of the U.S. Department of State. You may purchase health insurance through the Beloit College plan or from another company. Your health insurance policy must provide the following minimum coverage: $50,000 per illness or accident, $10,000 for medical evacuation, and $7,500 for repatriation of remains to your home country in case of death. Maternity (pregnancy, pre-natal, and birth) benefits must be included. International scholars must present evidence of health insurance within 7 calendar days of arrival.

Apply for an Extension Prior to the DS-2019 Expiration

Scholars must apply for an extension before their DS-2019 forms expires if they intend to stay at Beloit College. Scholars in the Research Scholar or Professor categories currently have a maximum of three years to complete their J-1 program. Short-term scholars have six months, and specialists have one year.

Report Changes in Program to OIE

Scholars must notify OIE when there is a change in their academic program or program dates.

Abide by Employment Regulations

J-1 scholars may conduct research or teach only at Beloit College unless specifically authorized ahead of time by OIE to give a lecture or consult at another institution. Scholars must contact OIE in advance if invited to speak or consult at another institution.

Receive Transfer Authorization Prior to Leaving Beloit College

If the scholar decides to transfer to another U.S. institution, s/he must request and receive transfer authorization from Beloit College’s International Student Advisor before beginning activity at that other institution.

Depart the U.S. within 30 Day Grace Period

Scholars must depart the U.S. within 30 days of the DS-2019 expiration date or program end date, whichever is earlier, unless they have applied for a change of status with the CIS.

Obtain Travel Signature Prior to Departing the U.S.

If the scholar plans to leave the U.S. and return to resume activity at the College, s/he must obtain a signature from OIE on their DS-2019 from prior to traveling outside the U.S. (a “travel signature”).

I have read and understood my responsibilities as a J-1 Scholar at Beloit College.
