Nature Ideas
Boxturtle sometimes has schedule conflicts. If he’s unavailable at your scheduled Nature time, you can either enjoy free time, use one of these nature ideas, or ask your PAs if they have an idea. Please decide ahead of time what you will do if he’s not available.
- Color hike: See how many things of a particular color you can see. Or see if you can find something of each color of the rainbow.
- Blind hike: Have the kids get in a line, holding hands with the kid in front & behind them. Tell them to close their eyes. A counselor leads (with eyes open) and tells the kid behind them if they need to move right or left, duck a branch, if there’s a bump in the path, etc. They quietly pass the info back. The ideas is the kids have to be quiet to hear instructions. They can hear more woods sounds. And the walk seems strange and longer than the time it actually takes. The nature trail is a good place to do this. It can easily use 15-20 minutes. PAs can be scattered through to help keep them on the path.
- ABC Hike: particularly useful for Daisies or young hikers, ask girls tostart at the beginning of the alphabet and identify something on the trail that begins with “A” then work through all the letters in the alphabet. If girls get stuck on a hard letter (like X or Z) see if they can find trees whose trunks make an X or sticks that fell in a Z pattern.
- Scavenger Hunt:this one can be planned ahead where girls get a list of things to find (but not always keep) as they begin the hike. The directions can be as simple as challenging the girls to find things that arefuzzy, small, rough, bumpy, smooth, big, soft, sticky, squishy, lumpy, wet, living, growing, round, triangular, moving, make noise, hard, smelly, etc.
- Check out the badge book for your unit’s age level. See if there’s something in a badge or tryit that you can do at camp. (If so, please let Hawkeye know, so we can pass that info on to the parents.)
Hawkeye’s Tent Sale
We have leftovers from previous years’ crafts and stuff people donate to us. Below is a partial list. These supplies will be available at Outdoor training. If you email Hawkeye before training, your request will be bagged up for you; please include your session and unit in your email. Otherwise, it’s a self-serve event out of the back of her minivan.
