National Honor Society Probation Policy

Effective January 20, 2015

National Honor Society holds its members to high standards, imploring them to uphold the promises they made upon their induction. Club members who fall below the standards set by NHS are subject to probation, and if the situation is not amended, dismissal from the Society, pending a hearing. If a student’s probationary period occurs during their final semester of high school, the student may walk at graduation without the NHS stole.

Membership is dependent upon

  1. Scholarship: your cumulative GPA must remain at 3.75 or higher
  2. Probationary criteria: GPA lower than 3.75 at the end of the semester.
  3. Service: completion of a required number of service hours each semester, and appropriate documentation of those hours.
  4. Probationary criteria: Failing to meet service hour requirements.
  5. Leadership: Consistent attendance at NHS meetings and required functions
  6. Probationary criteria: Failure to attend 3 or more meetings or required functions.
  7. Character: a clean discipline record in school and the community
  8. Probationary criteria: Lunch restriction, detention, In-School-Suspension, Out-of-School Suspension, extenuating criminal circumstances.

The main goal is not to punish club members, but it is to remind you that your acceptance into this club was based on your scholarship, your character, your leadership, and your service as voted by your teachers. You worked hard to attain this honor, you need to continue working hard to keep it. Success does not come to those who are complacent.

Process:

  1. The club advisor(s) will review cumulative GPAs, service hours, meeting attendance, and discipline referrals at the end of each semester.
  2. The club advisor(s) will meet individually with any offending students and will send a letter home informing parents of the students’ probationary status. This letter must be signed by the student and a parent or guardian.
  3. The following semester, the student should continue their regular NHS duties and amend the error that landed them in probation.
  4. If the error is not amended, or the student qualifies for probation in another area at the end of the probationary semester, the student will be asked to leave National Honor Society.
  5. Any cases pending dismissal are permitted a hearing before the Faculty Council. After a vote from the faculty council, students can, if they desire, appeal to the principal. The national office takes no part in dismissal proceedings unless there is a violation of the NHS Constitution.
  6. Please view Article X of the NHS Constitution here:
