Target Audience Profile: Fine Arts at Michigan Tech
What does it have to offer?
My PowerPoint presentation is designed to inform students about what the Fine Arts Department at Michigan Tech has to offer them. This student audience includes prospective students, incoming freshmen, and current students. The educational background of this group would be junior/senior high school, high school graduates, and first or second year college students. This could be presented to community members also, whose educational background could vary from high school graduate to college graduate. The target age range would be 16 and up. Putting a cap on the age range is not needed in this case because at the college level a first or second year student could be much older than the norm and a community member could be any age.
The size of the audience viewing this presentation could vary from 30 to 100, depending where it is being shown. It could be set up at a high school college fair or an open house where it is just constantly running on a laptop or it could be given as a presentation at freshmen orientation sessions, in Fine Arts classes, or any other place where there is a need to give a brief overview of this area at Michigan Tech. The people looking at this presentation will most times be very open to learning about what's included because they will have chosen to watch the presentation. The only time I can envision some resistance to the presentation is if it is shown in a class where not everyone is interested in these programs in specific.
This group will want to know how to get involved or how to add a minor if they see something they're interested in. It is safe to leave out the exact requirements for each minor and the names of the directors or instructors of the various groups or courses. The presenter could give most of this information or a brochure could be made available. The audience should at least be familiar with Michigan Tech or have some initial interest or knowledge of the university and it's campus.
I chose my design based on the color scheme, which has dark colors and black and white areas for text. This makes it easy to read the text and adds good contrast for picture viewing. The information included in this presentation uses language that is easy for anyone over the age of 16 to understand, with little or no clarification needed. The font used is a basic block style that is easily read on a screen (computer or projection screen).
If, for example, the target audience were changed to administrators at the university (keeping in mind that I am still relaying the message of what the Fine Arts Department has to offer at MTU), I would have to make changes and additions to the presentation. First I would add charts and graphs indicating how many students participate in different Fine Arts programs. I would also add information about how small the budget is for Fine Arts and how much they are able to do with it. Then I would eliminate the brief descriptions of the department minors, but add more information about the programming done by the instrumental, vocal, and theatre groups. It would probably be necessary to add some big words for them and probably change the backgrounds used to something with no pattern (something boring). Of course the presenter would have to wear a suit and pretend to be important, so they might listen. I think this PowerPoint slideshow could easily be modified to work for this type of group or another group.
