Salary:£7.50 - £9.50 per hour (depending on experience)

Holidays: 25 days and 8 bank holidays (pro rata)

Job Purpose: To support the Art coordinator in the development and delivery of an exciting and engaging programme of Art activities which will engage young people at Wigan Youth Zone. Artists with experience in: Graffiti, Ceramics, Photography, Printmaking,Fashion, Digital Art, Graphic Design are welcome to apply. This position requires working evenings and weekends.

Context of the post:

Wigan Youth Zone opened in June 2013 and is a £6m building project with state-of-the-art facilities, providing a wide range of sporting, artistic, cultural and general recreational activities and targeted services. Wigan Youth Zone provides a safe meeting place for young people, where they can participate in a wide range of positive activities, all for just 50p. The two-storey building has a four-court sports hall with climbing wall, a fully-fitted fitness suite, a boxing gym, dance and performing arts studios, as well as music, media and visual arts facilities. There is also a cafe, together with recreational and social areas. Externally there are four all-weather kick-pitches. Wigan Youth Zone is open 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, providing local young people with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.

Job Description

Key Tasks:

  • To support the Art co-ordinator in the development and delivery of creative Art activities at Wigan Youth Zone
  • To become part of a forward thinking, innovative and motivated art team and assist with the delivery of all aspects of art sessions with young people.
  • To work well in a team bringing fresh skills & ideas to the current offer
  • To motivate, encourage and support young people to try art activities and participate fully in sessions.
  • To break down any barriers to young people participating in the Art programme of activities;
  • To become part of sessional staffing requirements for the Art department
  • To support volunteers in sessions, coaching them to achieve their full potential within their given roles
  • To deal with any problems that arise during Youth Zone sessions;
  • Develop and maintain a professional relationship with the young people who attend the Art room.
  • Understand the needs of Wigan Youth Zone and communicate them in a clear, consistent way to the young people, parents and guardians
  • Prepare and deliver sessions that meet with Wigan youth zone rules and regulations.

related to projects, e.g. CAMHS, PCT’s, Local Authorities etc.

  • Ensure any young person, volunteer mentor, or other person connected with the

project and with whom you have contact with is made to feel an integral part of

Wigan Youth Zone

  • Set and review operational plans specific to your area with the Chief Executive.
  • Report on a regular basis to the Wigan Youth Zone Chief Executive and the

Wigan Youth Zone Board of Trustees

  • To undertake such other duties as requested from time to time by the Wigan Youth Zone Chief Executive and which are commensurate with the post

General:

  • To be alert to issues of safeguarding child protection, ensuring the welfare and safety of Youth Zone members is promoted and safeguarded, and to report any child protection concerns to the designated Child Protection Officers using the safeguarding policies, procedures and practice (training to be provided)
  • To assist with any promotional activities and visits that take place at the Youth Zone.
  • To actively promote the Youth Zone and positively contribute towards increasing Youth Zone membership.
  • To adhere to Wigan Youth Zone policies at all times, with particular reference to Health and Safety, Child Protection and Equal Opportunities

Other duties:

  • To carry out any other duty with the Youth Zone provision and facility operations, and within the competencies of the post holder, as directed by your line manager or a senior manager

Pension: Eligible, after six months’ service, to join the Wigan Youth Zone Personal Pension Scheme; 3% of salary is contributed by Wigan Youth Zone, if the employee contributes 3% or more.
