Elementary Principal’s Report – February
Friday, February 7th was our hundreth day of school. Many classrooms participated in activities that included “100” in the lesson. We also had a special guest who just recently turned 100 years old. Mrs. Mabel Gunning visited our school that Friday and talked with kindergarten through sixth grade students about what school was like when she attended school. She also answered a variety of questions the students had about her life, and her greatest memories. Mrs. Gunning also shared several stories that the students and staff found quite interesting. A big thank you to Mrs. Gunning!!
Tuesday, February 11th Davenport Elementary 5th Grade students learned from FBLA members, Sarah Vesneske, Chrissy Hannemann, and Abby Hanson, what it takes to become a business owner and the finer points of business accounting to computer profit or loss. They had a wonderful time as did the other grades that attended the business fair that took place at the competition of the project. Students received paper money, given the opportunity to look over their purchase choices, and then were able to buy the items they wanted. I heard many students talking about “The Best Deal.” Coincidently, one of the vocabulary words for second grade reading was budget. This project was a perfect way actually put that word to work!
Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Bell, and Mr. Zeiler had their hands full completing the assessment pieces required for the PEP Grant we received. We are now in the process of gathering recommendations from a variety of schools that use the PE curriculum/program we are considering. We have narrowed (the consortium of Reardan, Odessa, and Davenport) our choices to two programs – SPARK and/or FOCUSSED FITNESS.
We will be celebrating “Read Across America” on Friday, February 28th. Miss Washington USA, Allyson Rowe, will be here to talk with our students about setting goals and working toward achieving them. She will also entertain our students by reading a Dr. Seuss book.
Valentine parties were – Oh so sweet – on Friday the 14th.
All students will attend PE on Thursday, February 20th to participate in “Hearty Hoops.” This is designed by high school FBLA students as a project. All proceeds go to the Lincoln Hospital Foundation to help purchase cardiac bedside monitors.
The elementary school is almost done with the mid-year MAP test. I am including the average growth points for the grade levels that are finished: Our goal was 5 points.
