Abstract: - The huge difference between engineering and medical doctor education led us to propose a specific improvement to the knowledge, content and tactics of engineering studies. From all these multistage philosophies we alpha-tested the 19th step: “the Business supplement”. It concerns a publication unique for every lesson taught, that expands the scientific horizons up to the beloved money hights or to the underground world of economic transactions, depending form the ethics viewing angle. This publication contents varies from: industry sector layout; business key-players; celebrities; up to funding opportunities; internet maping; and (unfortunately) gray advertisement. The idea passed the alpha test and we expect minor modifications or major rearrangements to proceed to operational beta test at MARC teaching facilities at TEI of Kozani.

Key-Words: - business as knowledge, business supplement, medical education, engineering training, sponshorship, advertisement, money as evaluation factor.

1 Introduction

Medical Doctors education standards are laid out to a multivolume definition, from which indicatively we read references [1-3]. On the other side business education reformation started from 1986 with new media and technology assistance [4-8].

We examine the university and business interrelation in general and the medical doctor and engineering analogy.

Then we extensively describe our definition for a business supplement booklet and we give implementation details.

The adoption of our 24 stage reformation to engineering teaching knowledge is established through the economic value of our theory. Contribution to e-learning is measurable only as a side effect of our new media publishing procedure.

2 Engineering Education Elevation to Medical Doctor Standards

University knowledge and teaching has a number of artifacts that distort the academic value of the diploma. The problem is more difficult in engineering studies. Our wandering started from the huge difference between engineering and medical doctor education. The conceptual similarities like:

·  They both need a deep basic knowledge of sciences like Mathematics, Physics Statistics, Chemistry and others.

·  They both require physical skillness matched together along with scientific capability.

·  They concern both very complex systems: the human body and the advanced human made machinery.

·  They attract both the most brilliant minds in Hellenic and worldwide education system.

·  Graduates from both faculties are the most well paid scientists in our western society.

Apart from these similarities the two professions have total different studies and work opportunities. This happens for historical and vanity reasons. Beloved doctors cure human diseases while engineers manipulate low level living machines.

According to the above approach we introduced a number of improvements to the engineering knowledge that affected subsequently our teaching methodology for to our students. The following list first is referred to the medical doctor and then to the corresponding representation to engineering.

2.1 Surgery & Anatomy

Human bodies Anatomy in medical faculties is converted to:

·  Demolishing and re-assembling existing systems, (stage 11)

·  reverse engineering (st. 12)

·  regeneration of the initial (st.13)

·  recycling used parts and systems (s14)

2.2 Two years Regional Service

Two years regional medical service (a pre-requirement towards doctor degree to facilitate rural areas development) is transformed to:

·  One year actual working in contracting company with real factory and money. (s 15)

·  four hours partial employment (s 16)

·  Emulated in University hands on experience (s17).

2.3 Clinical Experience

The Three years of clinical assistance to a Hospital doctor is converted to:

·  Interaction with business environment. (s18)

·  Market sector knowledge. (s19)

·  Severe real life training like forgery and story telling. (s20)

2.4 Scientific Societies

The registration to a medical chartering body or doctor society has en exact equivalent to:

·  enrollement to the dominated Engineering society of Greece.(s21)

·  Participation to the a high profit distribution chartering body.(s22)

2.5 Lifetime Examinations

The annual written examinations of the American surgery association must be transliterated into:

·  Annually contractor certificate of performance for every construction that he ever made. (s23)

·  Annually Taxis Authorities statement, that the income partially is derived from engineering related activities. (s 24)

·  Participation at least in two technology or engineering conferences with fees. (s24)

There are more analogies to propose but we only analyze the stage 19 of the engineering medical philosophy. Actually there are not 24 aditional stages but only 14. We left space to polytechnic Faculties to incorporate 10 additional initially steps to their studies.

3 Business Supplement

During our apostleship as regional development advisors a lot of times we faced an annoying situation. After 6 years of advanced studies a young engineer is finally hired to work in an industrial or contracting environment. Every other week he faces the same reality:

·  He suggests a certain production or procedure improvement.

·  A local non-degree worker disagrees with his proposal and suggests something total different solution.

·  Always the low level worker opinion is adopted.

The reason of such a humiliation is that the experienced worker knows the business environment very well and justifies all the inter-related money artifacts very accurately.

These re-occuring incidents are taken place as a result of the academic – scientific orientation of the young engineer education. During his entire training he never faced the business reality. To face this reality a concrete action is required apart from the normal out-rated state and European Union actions. Our solution was a specific “business supplement” for every university lesson. An advanced full specification BS includes the following contents-chapters:

3.1 The Business Supplement

The so called BS (business supplement) in its simple form has features like:

·  It concerns the minimum academic unit of one single lesson or lab.

·  It contains information for the business sector related in any form with the University lesson.

·  It has significant size over 32 pages, since usually it “represents” hundreds million of Euros.

An advanced full specification BS includes the following contents-chapters:

·  The full university lesson name with code, description, professor, associate teachers, etc.

·  A lesson to business sector list; this is a one to many multilevel linked list. The starting address is the lesson internal code. It points to the classification code and name of the related business.

·  The Business sector is represented in a variety of formats like EU terminology, Hellenic IRS internal encoding AKAD, etc.

·  Key players companies in the field, full profile details like contact details, product list, financial info and history.

·  Manager and owner Celebrity list with full personal data, biography, bibliography, etc.

·  Industry sector non scientific magazines, in print and electronic form.

·  Geographic distribution of the business in Regional, Hellenic, European Union and International level.

·  Multidimensional GIS information.

·  Market research for the science, target group audience and all related marketing data.

·  Indicative products in the market today, with full feature specifications, advertisement strategy, market share etc.

·  Exaggerated projection of future products in the field as a result of a combined scientific and market research.

·  Internet resourcing special chapter with all related business information as a result of an anti-forgery data mining procedure.

·  Indicative advertisements, including history list, creative artwork, logos, etc.

·  Related legislative at National, European Union and International level.

·  All local and EU programmes and funding in General that could finance the lesson derived business opportunity.

·  All three level of product and company promotion which are: sponsorship, advertisement and gray advertisement.

3.2 Academic Adaptation

The BS layout must be adapted to local University environment. One of the main methodology questioning around our university was the inability to define a certain business opportunity for a number of “pure academic” lessons. This was the typical case of conservatism, as applied to engineering education.

Of course it is very difficult to downgrade the idea of Statistical Analysis to money machinery, but this is our world. According to a newly established theory of one of the authors (Prof Delides Costas), money is the ultimate evaluation factor of every human activity. Therefore the pure academic lesson of Statistical Analysis does only exist because it has a multi billion Euro Analogy to real world.

Apart form this general approach we faced specific opposition reasoning and we gave the following answers:

Question: How an Advanced Mathematics lesson could would find a rich related sponsor?

Answer: Mathematic business opportunity includes Book publishers, system analysts and programmers, high school and university teaching, a huge number of mathematics clubs and associations, specific industries like audience rating, consumer behavior analysis and others.

Q: How a university professor could downgrade his scientific image to a low level market approach and sponsorship (again).

A: This question exists only in the old world of Europe, where professors are like ancient Egyptians Farao “living god on earth”. University lessons only exist, because at a future (unknown today) level, they will serve in any form a specific economic progression.

3.3 Media list

Media and distribution list varies:

·  POD engine booklet up to 128 pages.

·  Paper bound book.

·  Various attached printed material.

·  Various data normal or POD formats from data CD to polymorphic web site.

·  English and Greek language support.

4 MARC case study

The methodology is under alpha test in our Information R&D sector of the Macedonia Research Center. We developed a full feature “BS” for the lesson “Business and IT Security” of the BA faculty. During development we faced a number of implementation problems like: rector questioning, the need of monthly material upgrade, sponsor awareness, language selection, print and distribution cost, state ethics, public call to choose the sponsor etc.

Our timeline is:

·  Laboratory Alpha test by Aug 2005.

·  Beta test in electrical Engineering faculty 2005-b semester.

·  Full adoption by the end of 2006.

We strongly believe that “business supplement” is a specific answer to engineering education reformation. We prefer this aggressive movement, in order not to endanger the engineer education takeover and total control from market monopolies.
