WELCOME

This notebook has been designed to make your assignment at our school as pleasant and worthwhile as possible. We recognize that you may be working in unfamiliar surroundings with unfamiliar faces. Hopefully, the information contained in this booklet will provide some answers to questions substitutes often have. Your service to Solomon Middle and High School is valued and appreciated.

TEACHER AUTHORITY

We expect every staff member to be treated in a courteous manner, the same as our students should expect from our staff. It is imperative that the teacher be in charge in the classroom. Anything less would lead to a poor educational opportunity for all.

Students are under the authority of ANY TEACHER at Solomon Middle and High School at ANY TIME they are on school grounds or at any school function. Students are expected to give respectful attention to requests and direction from ALL teachers regardless of whether or not they know them or have the teacher as an instructor in one of their classes. The bell is an indicator that the class period has come to a close but the teacher is the authority that dismisses the students from class. Students should not leave their seats if a teacher is speaking. A display of insubordination on the part of the student will not, under any reasonable circumstances be tolerated. Obscene language or verbal abuse by any student directed toward any school employee may result in a proposal for a long-term suspension.

It is to our advantage for you to have a positive teaching experience. If you have any questions or concerns as you move through the day, please feel free to ask fellow teachers or to consult administrators. We really want you day to be enjoyable and productive.

Along with this notebook, you should receive:

1. Substitute Teacher Feedback Form

2. Verification of Substitute Teaching Form

These two forms should be completed and returned to Mrs. Sare before you leave on the last day of your assignment.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

A good substitute is active and uses proximity to discourage misbehavior. Be up and about the classroom especially when kids are working. Be available to answer questions if you can/need. Post on the board the activity/assignment for the day so that students can prepare for it in their mid. If you need time to take lunch count and attendance, you might post a question for them to answer or think about that relates to the assignment. Do not tolerate poor/disrespectful behavior from a student. If the student becomes a significant distraction to the learning process, please notify the office and complete a hard copy of the discipline referral form.

HALLWAYS

Students should remain in class during the entire period. Students are not to be sent to the hallway to complete work or serve discipline offenses. The hallways need to remain clear throughout the school day except for students and staff passing from one location to another.
