Application due date: May 3, 2017

Audition date: June 8th 2:30-4:30pm

By signing below, I agree to the following:

With the exception of your academics, being a member of Dance West must be your number one priority for one year. It is important that you establish an understanding with your teachers that you will be missing classes for tours and performances. This is especially true the last half of the year when the company has concert tours and lecture-demonstrations. YOU are always responsible for making up any missed assignments when absent. All of these items must be taken into consideration before you decide to apply to become a member of Dance West.

  1. As a Full-time, Probationary, or Apprentice 1 or 2 member of the company, I understand no roles are promised to any student. Roles are assigned at the discretion of the Artistic Director and/or guest artist.
  2. I have a clear understanding that I will not be in every piece and that I may not have a leading role.
  3. I understand that most roles will be in the ensemble, and that to apprentice is an integral part of DW.
  4. I understand that, with the exception of my academics, I am making Dance West my number one priority for one year.
  5. I understand that I will take a two-period of technique class, as well as a 2 1/2-hour Dance West Company class each day and that additional rehearsals will be required during performances.

6.  I/we commit to fundraising efforts on behalf of the dancers, and to volunteering at all Dance West performances.

DANCE WEST II & RETURNING COMPANY RE-APPLICATION

This application is for returning 2016/17 Dance West and apprentices and Dance West II who wish to make a commitment to the 2017/18 season. Please read and respond to the information below with the knowledge that many times dancers remain in Dance West II for several years or until their skills have improved.

ALL CURRENT DANCE WEST II MEMBERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO AUDITION FOR PLACEMENT TO ASSESS THEIR PROGRESS.

Dance West is a class designed for the serious minded dancer who wishes an in depth, “real world “ experience in dance. The class will provide repertoire and performance opportunities designed to prepare students for their future goals in dance, i.e.…college or career.

·  There will be Oregon Symphony performances, the Annual ACMA Auction, The Dance West Concert, the DW photo shoot, and additional performances that will be booked throughout the year as requests come in from various community organizations, businesses and corporations.

·  Guest artists will also be booked for 7 to 10 days per residency.

Weekend rehearsals may need to be scheduled to accommodate their time. We will give as much notice as possible for these rehearsals. As much as possible, try to stay away from weekends.

·  Dancers will be expected to participate in pre and post - production work, which includes costume care, and props and Marley floor set up and strike.

Making a commitment to the Dance West season will mean that you as a dancer will be spending long hours engaged in classes and rehearsals that are designed to condition your body and mind to do the incredible things that the world of dance demands. This can be physically and mentally draining at times. Perspectives can become clouded. In an effort to keep the rehearsal environment healthy, we ask that you refrain from being overly critical of yourself and of others. In addition, please be responsible and drink plenty of water, rest and take care of sore muscles and injuries. Remember make smart food choices as improper nutrition can impact the quality & length of your performance.

It is important that all dancers selected be willing to give their all to any assignments and roles that they are given. Being in a dance company could be compared to being on a sports team in that there is a first string, so to speak. Select dancers are chosen throughout the year to perform featured roles given to them by teachers and choreographers. Learning to be respectful, gracious and patient is a real world skill that every dancer needs to have if they are to survive in this very competitive world.

Keeping a clear perspective is important but can be difficult at times. A sense of entitlement is an easy place to go when one works so hard and feels that they are not getting expected returns. Ensemble and chorus roles are as important as lead roles. Professional dancers have very long careers dancing in the chorus. It is critical that you as a dancer in Dance West come in with this understanding. Being supportive of this fact can make the difference between being a productive asset to a dance company or a deterrent. We will establish goals to help the dancers create a safe environment in which to learn, and a support system when pressures mount.

(OVER)

We encourage serious dancers to study outside of ACMA with private studios. We can be flexible to some degree but would need to know in advance of any conflicts. We would ask that you make DW your priority when guest artists and performance events are scheduled.

Is this something that you are willing to do? Can you foresee any conflicts at this point? Please identify.

Please explain how you plan to stay in “dance” shape over the summer? Where, and what classes will you be taking?

There may be times when we will travel and have to stay in hotel rooms. Because of budget constraints, you may have to stay with 2 to 3 roommates per room. You would be assigned your roommates.

Please reveal any issues that you may have with this and/or initial below if this is agreeable to you.

______Initial

Please describe your strengths as a dancer. What are your favorite dance styles? In what style of dance are you most accomplished?

In what areas do you feel there is need for you to improve?

Briefly offer what you think would help keep our studios and all special events become and remain a safe, respectful place in which to work and perform.

A rehearsal schedule is forthcoming

Please sign below and turn in to the main office.
