CLASS TITLE:HISTORIC CONSERVATOR

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Conducts inventory and tracking of artifacts in the laboratory's care.
  • Conducts cleaning and stabilization of artifacts from land and underwater archaeological sites.
  • Conducts chemical and physical analyzes to determine proper conservation procedures.
  • Conducts specialized conservation treatments on artifacts of metal, wood, leather, and other materials including composite specimens.
  • Creates and maintains records of conservation procedures for all items treated.
  • Prepares reports of conservation projects for presentation and publication.
  • Assesses and recommends selection of materials available for division under shipwreck salvage agreements.
  • Trains personnel in proper laboratory techniques and methods.
  • Arranges and monitors loans of artifacts.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles of physics and chemistry.
  • Knowledge of conservation methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of artifacts and their conservation requirements.
  • Knowledge of report writing techniques.
  • Skill in using laboratory equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Skill in using microcomputers.
  • Skill in maintaining detailed records in an orderly fashion.
  • Skill in preparing and presenting reports of conservation activities.
  • Ability to identify and classify archaeological artifacts as to conservation requirements.
  • Ability to prepare scientific reports.
  • Ability to assess conservation needs and select appropriate conservation treatments.
  • Ability to conduct conservation treatments for artifacts of metal and organic material from land and underwater archaeological sites.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in chemistry, physics, archaeology, anthropology or history with emphasis in conservation and two years of experience in the conservation of archaeological materials; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, physics, archaeology, anthropology or history with specialization in conservation and one year of experience in the conservation of archaeological materials.
