January 20, 2011 — Can the crippling U.S. debt be contained? This timely question will be discussed Thursday, February 10 from noon to 2:00 pm at a public forum called Balancing Act: A Dialogue on Public Debt and Fiscal Policy. The event takes place at the Commerce Club at 191 Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta and brings together economic policy makers for a lively discussion. Constitutional controls used in Switzerland, Great Britain and Canada will be highlighted as well as the U.S approach. Tickets are $25 including lunch; reservations are required. The forum is hosted by the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta to honor Albert Gallatin’s 250th birthday – one of history’s most prominent Swiss Americans and the longest serving U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. He was adamantly opposed to public debt and cut it in half back in 1801 when the sum was only $80 million. Today, the U.S. public debt hovers at a staggering $13.9 trillion.
