Useful Packet Sites, cont’d

Node: A packet system that knows how to reach other packet systems. Once you connect to a node, you can ask to connect to a remote site without knowing the actual path to that site. E.g., once connected to LYONS, you can ask to connect to SRABBS or JAXBBS and let the packet network worry about how to get you there.

Node Name and Node Callsign: synonyms for a node. You can use either one.

Frequency: The frequency you would use if you are in the geographical area of the node and are connecting directly to that node. For example, if you find yourself in Douglas County, you would tune your radio to 145.09 and connect to DC, and then you can connect other nodes and BBSs.

BBS Call or BBS Name: synonyms for the BBS related to the listed node. Use either name when connecting to the BBS.

BBS Address: when sending packet messages to a user at a BBS other than the one you are connected to, use the full hierarchical address. Huh? Short answer: callsign @ bbsname.or.usa.noam. This means the message is intended for the user with “callsign” at the BBS “bbsname” located in Oregon, in the USA, in North America. For example, n8gfo @ srabbs.or.usa.noam. NOTE: there are spaces before and after the ‘@’.

Note: LYONS is the normal node of entry for Benton County packet users. It has links to other nodes using other frequencies. CVO is second choice. It uses the same frequency to talk to other nodes that it talks to users with.
