Job purpose
The Centre for Primary Care and Public Health is seeking to appoint a Research Project Coordinator to work at the Women’s Health Research Unit, coordinating the externally fundedCROWN (Core Outcomes in Women’s Health) initiative which aims to identify areas within women’s health where core outcome sets need to be developed and to encourage their dissemination and use. CROWN has the potential to make a huge impact, and ultimately to improve the standard of medical care that women receive. CROWN’s membership includes over 70medical journals, worldwide. A major part of the role will be to liaise with the Editors-in-Chief of these journals.
The postholder will work alongside researchers and support staff at the WHRU as well as with editorial staff from the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (BJOG) who have been running the project thus faras well as editors of the CROWN member journals. The role will involve maintaining, developing and updating the CROWN website, organising and administering meetings, liaising with the CROWN journals regarding publishing agreements and publication of core outcome sets and drafting documents for the CROWN project. You will be required to liaise with the COMET (Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials) initiative team, who are overseeing the development of core outcome sets across all medical specialties.

  • Communication software – all functions of MS Outlook, Lotus Notes or similar, internet searching.
  • Spreadsheets – producing multi-sheet tables, graphs, sorting and filtering.
  • Ability to persuade and negotiate at an individual level.
  • Ability to work on own initiative without supervision and prioritise own schedule, and that of others, dividing time between projects appropriately. Commitment to acquire complete project management skills.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of the aims and objectives of the CROWN initiative and the work of the COMET initiative.
  • Act as the main point of communication for the CROWN initiative including organisation of mailshots and collaborators’ meetings.
  • Work with the project supervisors to develop the CROWN initiative and take over responsibility for running the initiative from BJOG.
  • Prepare newsletters, website information and progress reports.
  • Actively market CROWN to journal editors, researchers, patients and clinicians and promote the CROWN logo as a mark of quality standard.
  • Expand the consortium of journals (including participation of general journal e.g. British medical Journal) to promote COS in all women’s health conditions
  • Liaise with journal Editors-in-Chief in order to:
  • Arrange face-to-face or teleconference meetings (it is likely that these will be held at medical conferences)
  • Develop a consortium agreement on publication that is compliant with copyright laws and acceptable to publishers.
  • Effectively disseminate COS through CROWN by promoting quality peer-review of manuscripts describing COS using agreed guidelines and checklists to be published on the CRWON website.
  • Maintain the CROWN website as a source of accurate and relevant information for researchers, editors, patients and funders. Including a core outcome blog (this will be written by a member of the research team).
  • Coordinate the creation and publication of COS resources specific to women’s health, including methodological guides.
  • Collaborate with the World Health Organization (WHO), COMET, and women’s health specialist societies (e.g. British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology) to prioritise women’s health conditions that urgently need COS.

Working Environment
  • Assist with development of CROWN.
  • Responsible, under the general guidance of the Line Manager/Supervisor/PI, for undertaking the programme of work.
  • Prepare meeting agendas and necessary documentation as well as recoding and disseminating minutes.
  • May have to Contribute towriting papers summarising research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals (of high international standing wherepossible). Contribute to other reports where possible.
  • Any other relevant activities related to the project as appropriate.
  • Maintain appropriate databases, keeping accurate written and computerised records and to ensure that these records arestored in a secure place and to maintain confidentiality of all electronically stored personal data in line with the provisions ofthe Data Protection Act.
  • Keep up to date with subject related and professional issues, in particular, developments in the specific subject area.
  • Comply with relevant College policies and regulations with due regard to financial matters, harassment, equal opportunities,public interest disclosure, health and safety, intellectual property and patenting, data protection or any other rules,regulations or codes binding on the member of staff.
  • Participate in the College Appraisal Scheme and demonstrate a commitment to continuing professionaldevelopment.
  • The duties of the post outlined above are not exhaustive, and the postholder will be expected to be co-operative andflexible, undertaking such administrative and other duties as may from time to time be reasonably expected of a member ofresearch grade staff in a university.
  • These duties will be subject to review in line with the changing requirements of the School or College, and with thedevelopment needs of the postholder as identified through regular review/appraisal processes.

Routine project management decisions to ensure the smooth running of the initiative, including most non-staff expenditure.

Decisions involving major expenditure e.g. venues/ hotel booking for meetings would involve discussion of the budget with the project supervisor.
