WhatisthePre-EngineeringMagnetProgram?
Although the term "engineering"is inthetitleofourmagnet program,ourstudents arecertainlynotlimited to the fieldofengineering.Students whohaveaninterestinmath,science,medicine,or themilitaryas fields ofstudyand as a possiblecareerwillbenefitfrom participation inourmagnet program.Students whohave participatedinour program havegoneontocollegetostudycivilandmechanicalengineering,chemistry,automotive design, acoustics,computerapplications andmedicine.
Howdoestheprogrambenefityourstudent?
Themagnet program hasacorecurriculum thatfocuses on math andscienceclasses,manyofferedatthe advanced,gifted,or APlevel.Unique to themagnetprogram,students arerequiredto takeFoundationsof EngineeringandTechnologyinthe9thgrade,EngineeringConceptsin the10thgrade,Engineering Applicationsinthe 11thgradeandEngineeringInternshipinthe12thgrade. Ourexperiencehas beenthat theseacademic classes at the higherlevelalsooffer thebenefitofsmallerclasssizes andmoreopportunityfor teacher-studentinteractionand instruction. Ourmagnetstudents havemore toofferontheircollegeapplications,moreopportunities forcollege grants andscholarships,andare well preparedforthe rigors ofcollegeclasses theyareabletomakeasmoother transitionfrom thehigh school to thepost-secondaryenvironment.Manyofourmagnetstudents areaccepted in engineeringprograms at GeorgiaTech,SouthernPoly-Tech, MercerUniversityand GeorgiaSouthern.
Students inthe Pre-EngineeringMagnet Program arealsorequired to become amemberoftheCareerand TechnicalStudent Organizationknownas TSAorTechnologyStudent Organization.TheTechnologyStudent Associationfosters personalgrowth,leadership,andopportunities intechnology,innovation,design,and engineering. Members applyandintegratescience,technology,engineeringandmathematics conceptsthroughco- curricularactivities,competitiveevents and relatedprograms.
Eventhough our programis relativelynew,ourmagnet program students alreadyhavealonglistof accomplishments andhonors.Aspartofourmagnetcourses,students takingourclass routinelyparticipatein competitionup tothe RegionalandStatelevel.
