Course Description:
Sixth Grade language arts class is a core class that includes oral language, vocabulary, reading, and writing. The students will explore various types of literature, utilize the writing process to create their own written work, and continue to develop their vocabulary, spelling and grammar skills.
Materials:
* Paper

* 1 one inch three ring binder
* Packet of five notebook dividers
* Colored Pencils
* Highlighter
* Student planner (to be provided by the school)
Goals and Objectives:
The students will:
- Participate orally in individual and small group activities.
- Read and respond to a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
- Increase reading comprehension and develop greater fluency in reading.
- Increase word knowledge, vocabulary, and spelling skills.
- Develop grammar, written language, and written expressions skills.
- Select and use appropriate reference sources for research.
General Pacing Guide: All SOLs are incorporated throughout the entire school year.
SOL / Subject / Content6.1, 6.2 / Oral Language / The students will analyze oral participation, listen critically, and express opinions in small group activities and oral presentations.
6.3 / Vocabulary / The students will read and learn the meanings of unfamiliar words and phrases.
6.4 / Reading / The students will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
6.5 / Reading / The students will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of informational selections.
6.6, 6.7 / Writing / The students will plan, draft, and revise narratives, descriptions, and explanations and will edit for grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling and sentence structure.
Assignments:
Students are expected to work efficiently and effectively in class to accomplish assigned tasks. Homework will be assigned occasionally. Please check your child’s planner daily to assist him/her with any assignment that is to be completed outside the school setting.
Absent work policy:
- If students are absent, it is their responsibility to get their assignments. We will have a designated area in the classroom for make up work.
- Students will need to speak with the teacher to arrange due dates.
- Long-term projects are due the first day back from student’s absence.
Late work policy:
- Points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late.
- Assignments not completed within one week of the due date will not be accepted.
Assessment Criteria:
A points grading system will be used for various areas of performance.
Homework20pts (each assignment)
Notebook 25pts (each notebook check)
Class work40 pts (each assignment)
Writing 50 pts (each assignment)
Tests and Projects100 pts (each test/project)
Classroom Policies:
The central rule of the language arts classrooms: BE RESPECTFUL!
Students are expected to follow all rules that govern our school, which are provided in the student planner.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Planners are to be used each day!
- Bring materials, including pencils and paper, to class each day.
- Complete all assignments in a timely manner.
- Have a book for silent reading at all times, for all classes.

Classroom Management System for Language Arts
Students are expected to behave in a safe, respectful, and responsible manner at all times.
1st offense – warning with name on board
2nd offense – Time out of classroom 5 minutes;
Conference with teacher at end of class
3rd offense – Time Out Room (15 minutes) and call home
Three time outs = In School Suspension (ISS)
More serious rule infractions will result in automatic office referral.
Excessive behavior concerns may result in a conference with the student, parent, and teacher and/or after school detention.
