INSTRUCTOR'S NOTE:

The skills and information covered in this course are extremely valuable and will assist in preparing you for your Career and Internship opportunities. I look forward to helping you reach your training and employment goals!

Critiques: Critiques will be conducted as open, informal forums where you will discuss and comment upon other students' work in a constructive, critical, and intelligent manner. There will be final critiques of finished work for all projects, as well as group critiques of preliminary work for certain projects throughout the semester. I expect you to openly question your fellow students on their decisions in regard to concept, design and presentation. Be prepared to answer for your work - no decision is made arbitrarily, and I want to know why you did what you did, and to explain why you believe your design is effective and appropriate to your concept. You are also expected to use academic vocabulary during presentations. Attendance during critiques is crucial. I expect everyone to have their work finished and ready for show promptly at the beginning of class on critique days. No presentation make-ups will be permitted.

Instructor will grade most projects on students' computer monitor.

Major projects will be printed at the end of each quarter to exhibit.

Your final project designs will be printed and mounted or matted on black mat board with spray adhesive or rubber cement. I will go over more on presentation for specific projects as the semester unfolds. Clean presentation is a must in graphic design and plays a large role in how your work is perceived.

Yearbook Staff (YBS)

Introduction

There are many aspects to being a member of the yearbook staff. Each aspect requires total commitment and a positive attitude. If at any time this school year you are unwilling or unable to provide either of these to your work, you are urged to drop this course.

Yearbook is a year-long course and a year-long commitment. It is my hope is that students will take the course more than one year. The staff and I invest time and energy in training you; we expect a return on that investment. Likewise, you will benefit from your investment in many ways.

As a member of the yearbook staff you will learn many skills that will help you in your high school career and later in life, including the following:

• leadership,

Interviewing / reporting

Public speaking

• writing

• editing

• peer tutoring, peer evaluation

• marketing

• budgeting

• advertising

• public relations

• keyboarding

• computer graphics

• graphic design

• photography

• time management

• cooperative learning

& MUCH MORE!

Staff member responsibilities include the areas of Advertising Sales (Business Ads, Baby Ads), Photography (Photos at school functions, photos during school), Copywriting and Copy Editing, and Public Relations. Fundraising is also a part of yearbook. All five aspects work together to complete our yearbook. Your efforts have a direct effect on the quality of our high school’s yearbook.

Yearbooks have several purposes. They document history -- of the school, of the sports and activities, of the students, of the community. Yearbooks stop time. They remind people of what things were like in high school (don’t you wish your parents would look at their yearbooks more often?) Yearbooks make people feel important when they see their own pictures or names. Yearbooks also promote school spirit.

In order for our yearbook to serve all of these purposes, your dedication, cooperation and time are needed. Although much of the work will be done in class, you will be required to spend time outside of class as well. All tasks must be completed and all deadlines must be met, regardless if they fit into the 120 minute class period we are allotted.

As your yearbook adviser, my job is to train you and provide you with the tools you need to create an exciting, memorable and ACCURATE yearbook for the students of Simon Tech High School to appreciate forever. You have my commitment that I will teach you to the best of my abilities and that I will do everything in my power to give you the tools you need to make our yearbook the best edition ever. You have my commitment. Do I have yours?

This is a graded assignment. Return this page only to the teacher. Failure to return this page after the due date results in a continued loss of points until this page is returned.
