WELCOME

1. Marnie's questionnaire

- if you could get them to Marnie ASAP

- there are several levels to accreditation of clinics, rehab specialists and prosthetists have specific accreditation, but physios don't. This was the primary reason for the questionnaire.

- next accreditation meeting is in June

2. Craig

- we need to be more proactive for both accreditation and possible changes to the award. Rebecca suggested that minutes should be taken.

3. Physiotherapy award

- goes infront of the Industrial Relations Commission on the 27th of April. The primary argument is how physio practice has changed since 1996.

- the proposed changes has streams for sole practioners and clinical experts, as well as management.

- As a result, if we can show that we have been attending training, workshops, conferences and participating in research it will aid in the argument for a change of award.

-if you have anything to add to the work values case emailed by Sandeep, send him any suggestions, or email then to the Health Services Union.

4. Karl Schurr's presentation on "levels of evidence" will be on the NSW PAR website (

5. Wendy Robinson's presentation on "revisiting RRDS" will be on the website

6. Following Wendy's presentation on RRDs and poor evidence relating to its efficacy

- Craig suggested RRDs as a possible research topic

- Peter at Westmead feels that using soft dressings would be unethical. As believes that rigid dressings are far superior. Wouldn't mind comparing rigid dressings (including the knee) and RRDs, but would have difficulty with subject nos

- Sandeep willing to compare RRDs and soft dressings as RPAH don't regularly do RRDs on vascular pts and research may be one way of getting vascular surgeons to agree. But needs to meet with vascular surgeons to see if they will agree. However may not be at RPAH for much longer as he's applied for another job.

-working party comprising Sandeep, Carolyn, Wendy, Mykim. Naomi would like to be kept in the loop also.

7. Practical session on RRDs

- three different materials (Rhena Therm, shapemate and fiberglass)

- different suspension methods (tubigrip/tubifast, suprapatella strap, Velcro strap at midthigh)

8. Balance and postural adjustments

- presentations will be on the website

- panel discussion

9. Therapeutic Goods Act (Tony)

- the refined TGA becomes law in October. Temporary prostheses will be classed as level 1 medical goods according to the TGA. As a result, there needs to be formal documentation to ensure quality control of prosthesis. In part, this means that new components need to be ordered, as manufacturers (such as Otto Boch) state that components are single use only, and cannot guarantee that components won't fail with repeated use or microfractures in poles. Therefore, failure of temporary prostheses with recycled components will be a failure in quality control and therefore subject to possible litigation.

- main problem for ordering new components is budgetary constraint

- what will happen after October if the hospital executive don't approve funding. Questions that arise are:

i) Do we continue making temps? If so, how do we get funding for the components? If not,

ii) Will Area health services employ prosthetists either as part of the area health service, or contract out to prosthetic companies? If so, needs to occur by October.

Tony will find out more information and liaise with Rebecca at the ALS.

10. temporary and interim data collection is ongoing

- interim: 59 out of 80 subjects have started data collection
