The following are key terms and concepts you should understand from this course.

The desktop computer consists of the following components:

·  CPU– central processing unit; it is the primarycomponentof a computer that processes instructions (requires power) THIS IS WHERE THE HARDWARE IS FOUND.

·  KEYBOARD– allows you to type and input information (connected to the CPU)

·  MOUSE– allows you to select information on the monitor (connected to the CPU)

Common file endings:

·  .doc – Word document

·  .ppt– PowerPoint document

·  .gif .jpeg -image/graphic files

Each website ends with a domain (.com, .net, .edu, .gov, .org, etc.) This domain name can help you determine which sites may be more reliable than others. The two most reliable domains are .edu and .gov. Sites ending in .gov are slightly more reliable, because .edu sites are not always monitored for accuracy.

·  .com - for businesses and commercial enterprises; most companies use this extension.

·  .net - for networks; usually reserved for organizations such as Internet service providers

·  .edu - for educational institutions and universities

·  .gov - reserved for United States government agencies

·  .org - for non-commercial organization

Computer Vocabulary:

·  Software- This is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do, how to perform a task, or the applications and the operating system on the computers.

·  PowerPoint – used to create slide show presentations; allows users to add images, text, charts, shapes, etc.; you are able to use animation to bring your slide to life by animating items on each slide and create transitions between each slide, add music, and add a voice recording.

·  The first website your internet browser directs you to is called the homepage.

Parts of a web address:

·  The httpindicates what type of protocol you need to view this item. The protocol is the way in which two systems communicate. Examples of other protocols are ftp or telnet.

·  The www : stands for World Wide Web. This is the name of the "host" computer where the web page is stored and is a common name given to computers connected to the web.

·  The google : is the Domain Name

·  The com : The domain
