45 REARING CALVES

Average - £228.00
An excellent trade for a mediocre show of calves with all types going to rear and all sold.
Dairy Breeds (6): 2 best types from G M Lambert £140 and £130, £80 for K G & C Y Gough – Avg £84.
Native Breeds (11): Few about but well sold. Hereford bulls to £190, Hereford heifers to £190 for & E Best. Angus again sold well topping at £248 for P C & R Jenner,£220 for W J Hunt. Medium bulls £150-£180. Angus heifers sold well to reach £200 and £212 for W J Hunt, £165 and £185 for Don Ingles.
Simmental (11): Best bulls reached £300 for K G Gough, best £285+. Heifer to £260 also for Ken Gough. £180-£240 for a good run of heifers from Brian Reeves.
Limousin (5): Bulls to £280 and £310 and heifers £290 for Robert Oughton.
British Blue (6): The two best calves on offer of this breed today and both from L Lewis, Brinkworth. The bull topped at a super £390, their heifer at £300. Robert Oughtons bulls made £380 & £385, £382 for Ben Gough, £320 for Liz Best. 5 avg £372
12 BEEF COWS & CALVES

A freshly calved Friesian heifer sold to £1360 from Mr B Rich, Blaisdon. A dispersal sale of beef cows from Mr M Cook, Shuthonger saw Charolais cows to £940 with the Aberdeen Angus x bull calves split off selling to £550. A Hereford cow with her Angus heifer calf sold to £1100 from the same home.

A very good entry for the middle of May, with the numbers forward from 1st January to date up nearly 10% on the previous year. The trade was still good despite the continuing low beef trade and shortage of grass.
The Continental x steers (24 – 30mnths) sold to a good trade with the stronger meated sorts £780 - £850 topping at £945 (123p/kg) for Limousin’s from M/s M & D Lewis, Water Eaton. The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £775 (125p/kg) from M/s A Smith & Co, Sopworth. Overage steers sold to £790 (114p/kg) from the same home.
The strong Continental heifers (24 – 30mnths) sold to a good trade with the better sorts £700 - £780 topping at £845 (151p/kg) for a Simmental from Mr R Lewis, Devizes. The native breeds saw British Friesian heifers to £678 (105p/kg) from Mr C Shield, Arlingham.
The farming cattle (18 – 24mnths) saw another wonderful show of cattle forward. Trade was improved on last week with the stronger better shaped sorts traded between £750 - £850 (130 – 145p/kg) topping at £862 (140p/kg) & £795 (140p/kg) for Charolais x steers from M/s Manor Farm Partnership, Marlborough. The general run of Continental steers traded between £700 - £750 (120 – 135p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £805 (130p/kg) from M/s G & J Hyett, Whaddon with Hereford steers to £792 (144p/kg) from Mr S Freeth, Cirencester.
The heifers (18 – 24mnths) were also a firm trade with the better shaped sorts over £700 topping at £820 (134p/kg) for a Limousin from Mr E Hemmings, Horsley. Charolais heifers sold to £765 (136p/kg) from Mr J Randall, Warrens Gorse. The general run of Continental heifers traded between £550 - £650 (125 – 140p/kg). The native breeds saw Hereford heifers to £600 (142p/kg) again from Mr S Freeth, Cirencester.
The younger steers (15 – 18mnths) sold to a good trade with the best Continental steers selling between £680 - £750 (130 – 155p/kg) topping at £785 (157p/kg) for a Charolais x steer from M/s A & P Cutler & Son, Fairford. A grand run of Saler x steers from Mr M Green, Shellingford sold to £760 (148p/kg) & £718 (149p/kg). The general run of Continental steers traded between £620 - £700 (125 – 145p/kg).
The younger heifers (15 – 18mnths) saw the better shaped sorts trading between £550 - £630 generally topping at £755 (129p/kg) f& £638 (137p/kg) for Charolais heifers from M/s D & M Whitcombe, Minety. The general run of heifers traded between £500 - £550 (120 – 135pkg)
The weaned calves & young stores sold to a strong trade with the better shaped steers trading generally between £550 - £580 topping £702 (176p/kg) for British Blue steers (8 – 9mnths) from Mr E Hemmings, Horsley.

Again an improved entry with a slip in trade all week but again our trade well ahead of most other centres. The best handyweight lambs traded between 215 – 220p/kg topping at 221p/kg 3 times from Mr M Bennett & M/s C B Powell & Son. for 38kg £83.80 & 41kg £90.50 from M/s J & J Price. The general run of lambs sold between 210 – 215p/kg. The heavier sorts saw 51½kg to £94.50 from Mr A Cunninghame.

A similar number forward sold to a very good trade but a shade easier with the weakening euro affecting the export trade. The best handyweights hoggs traded between 185 – 195p/kg topping at 198p/kg £81 for 41kg from Mr D Parry. The general run of handy & medium weight hoggs traded between 178 – 185p/kg. The heavier hoggs also met a good trade selling to £99 for 56kg from Mr D Davis.

Again a pleasing entry sold with the edge just off the trade but still extremely good. The best Suffolk & Continental ewes traded between £90 - £110 (over £100 6 times) topping at £124. Best Mules traded between £75 - £90. The half meated ewes also met a good trade selling generally between £65 - £80 with the plainer & smaller sorts £55 - £65 generally. Slaughter rams sold to £65.

Again the trade was extremely strong with Continental ewes with double lambs to £178 (£59.33 a life) from Mr T Herbert. .
Mule ewes with doubles sold to £176 (£56 a life) & Suffolk x ewes with doubles to £176 (£58.66 a life) from Mr A Ractliffe.

A few more forward with the trade a touch sharper and well ahead of many centres this week. The few better shaped sorts traded over 145p/kg with steers topping at 154p/kg (twice) for 715kg & 750kg Blonde steers from M/s M Hocken & Sons & Mrs N Selwyn respectively. The general run of cattle traded between 132 – 138p/kg.
A run of smart Limousin bulls sold between 150 – 159p/kg from Mr M Potter.
31 OTM CATTLE & BARREN COWS

Average - £571.00
A reasonable entry sold to another strong trade with more wanted to meet demand.
13 Friesian cows sold to atop of£886 for P J & S R Bennett and £727 from the same home. Best meated Friesians £620+ with smaller and medium framed half meated types £420-£450. The very plain Friesians sold 60-70p £35-£400.
The beef bred cows saw Hereford to £758 for DW Rumming & Sons, Simmental to £652 from Paul Slinger. A run of Guernsey cows saw the best fleshed types traded at £500-£520, smaller medium types £340-£420. Angus cows sold to £548 from Paul Slinger.
Overage steers sold well to reach £938 for Blue from M J C Hocken & Son, £900 for V J Vines & Son, 4 medium meat Angus steers made £515-£590 all around the 100-110p per kg.
A South Devon bullock from the Exors of Arthur Organ made £728.
Overage Friesian heifers to £7856 for P J & S R Bennett, South Devon to £662 for W Brown & Son.
