Museum Visit Information for Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art:

Read this information before going.

Field Trip Information: SPSU ARTS 2001, to Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art (MCMA). MCMA is approx. 2 ½-3 miles from SPSU.

Hours: Museum is open 11-5 Tues –Fri.; Sat 11-4*. Sun.1-4; Closed Mon. * May close early when building is rented, call ahead to confirm.

Verification of your visit is required with your submitted report: Signature Required: to verify your visit you must have the top of the sheet you write your notes on signed at the time of your visit by a person at MCMA registration desk. (or by course instructor D. Colebeck if she is at the museum when you are. Do not take brochures, flyers etc. from the museum as verification- instructor has seen them & the museum has limited resources!

Photo required: take a photo of yourself at the museum, (lobby area is fine). Ask permission to photograph without a flash, artworks you find interesting and select to write about, include in paper if possible black and white is ok.

*Students are encouraged to carpool to MCMA as parking is very limited. Pay lots are nearby, see below. *

Directions from SPSU: Exit left onto South Marietta Parkway. Travel approx. 2 miles to Atlanta Street (just before the railroad overpass) Turn right onto Atlanta Street. Go 2 blocks. Located 30 Atlanta St. on the left at the traffic light at Anderson Street, one block before the City of Marietta Square.

Parking: Free and Paid: Free parking is located: behind the museum; Just before the museum is a City Parking lot; and limited on street parking –watch signs. Street parking is also free for 2 hours. (Streets are one way so you may need to circle around the block turning left behind the museum building and going to the corners to get back onto Atlanta Street. There are also Pay parking lots located a few blocks from MCMA turning right down Anderson Street costs vary. There are police who walk the streets and write tickets!

Special Exhibition/ main Museum Gallery Spaces: The first floor has 3 main galleries.

Mezzanine Gallery: 2nd floor at rear of building. Take the stairs off the lobby to the right and follow signs to the gallery. (2nd Floor Mezzanine exhibition spaces may have selections from the Permanent Collection of MCMA, and/or smaller special exhibition.)

Objectives of the visit:

I Notice architectural features of the Greek Revival Building: (Doric columns; Pediment; inside consoles, acanthus leaves)

II View original works of art in a museum setting: (recognize subject matter; traditional and non-traditional)

III Recognize various media: (painting) oil-acrylic-watercolor, (drawing) pastel-charcoal-ink on paper, (sculpture), mixed media and traditional crafts media- ceramics, wood, glass, textiles, metals, etc.

IV Recognize elements and principles of art as they are used/arranged to compose the composition of artworks.

V Recognize artists individual styles; (view artworks by living local/regional American Artists)

VI Identify and evaluate artworks, critique and determine preferences; artworks that “caught your eye”

The exhibits are an excellent way for SPSU students to do identification and practical application of the elements of art and principles of design and analysis of composition. See below for specifics to notice and activities at MCMA.

For each area of the museum there are specific things for students to focus on and look for.

Exterior of Building: Architecture and architectural details, columns- Style is Doric (Donut shape at top); Pediment - triangular shape near roofline above columns.

Interior Foyer: 3 hanging light fixtures- acanthus leaf design; consoles –decorative s curves brackets around ceiling

Galleries: For each part: Identify an artwork in each of the galleries that: “caught your eye” that you found interesting.

[(Think of the elements &principles) colors, use of light, feelings it gives you etc. Be specific, use descriptive words and examples.]

Start in Gallery 1, then 2 and 3; go to the 2nd floor using the stairs and view Mezzanine-galleries 4 and 5.

REMINDERS:

Take the form with you to the museum.

Fill out in pencil.

Bring your camera, camera/phone to take a photo of yourself.

Type up your report, include your photo at the museum and include images of artwork you viewed if photos are allowed.

Composition, Focal point (where do you look first and why); balance, perspective- (how is depth shown, larger in front and smaller further away, etc.) Point of view; (eye level - above-looking down -birds eye; straight on or from below looking up) Are some images more dramatic or dynamic because of the point of view? Composition and Cropping- what is included; what is cut off or omitted? ; how does the negative space around the object(s) effect the image? Value (the lightness and darkness) –images need contrast to be dynamic, look for dark & light value. (Look for these basics of art in other artworks/galleries of the museum)
