Behaviour Policy 2009 draft 3

Section 1:Purpose of the policy.

This policy will

  • Support children in “becoming the best they can be.”
  • Outline a whole school system for rewards.
  • Outline a whole school policy of sanctions.
  • Ensure consistency of approach by all members of the school community.

Qualities the policy will support in the pupils include:

Quality / Exhibited by being
Confidence / Cheerful, friendly, truthful, responsible
Resilience / Polite, patient, persevering, brave
Awareness of self in society / Kind, empathetic, considerate, thoughtful, careful, tidy, honest, respectful unselfish, fair-minded
Enthusiasm for learning / All the above and
open to change, self-critical but of high self esteem, a team player, and prepared to go the extra mile.
Intrigued by difficulty and keen to improve in every way.

Children learn as they live, so it is vital that these qualities be modelled to pupils and that if they have made a mistake in their conduct they learn from it and have the opportunity to attempt to put things right. This policy aims to explain how the elements of rules, rewards and sanctions work together to embed these qualities in the life of the school.

Children need to feel safe in order to develop to their full potential. To feel safe they need boundaries. They will learn where the boundaries are if praise and reward is linked to good behaviour and if poor behaviour is inevitably linked to a consequence in a system that they can understand.

Rules.

There are four Golden Rules. These are:

  1. I will allow myself and others to learn.
  2. I will keep my hands, feet and equipment to myself.
  3. I will treat everybody and their possessions with respect and kindness.
  4. I will do as I am asked by adults in school.

Each class will discuss these rules at the beginning of the year to ensure that they are thoroughly understood and to agree what they mean in terms of the day to day running of the class. Children will be encouraged to sign up to them; the class could make and display posters for their room.

The role of LSAs

LSAs working in the classroom will follow the teacher’s lead in extending rewards and sanctions to the children in the room. When LSAs are working with small groups of children elsewhere in the school they follow the same principles of warning / sanctions / rewards and let the teacher know, if necessary, how pupils have behaved during the group session. On occasion it may be necessary to return a pupil to the classroom before the session has ended. This is a serious matter and will be dealt with as it deserves as described in the section dealing with sanctions.

MSAs

MSA operate on the same principles of rewards and sanctions as explained below. MSAs will give children house points if they have been unusually well behaved or helpful. They will issue yellow cards if necessary as explained in the sanctions section.

Headteacher/Deputy Head/Assistant Head

When child is on red traffic light and is sent to Head/Deputy/Assistant Headteacher, a standard letter will be sent home. In the event of being sent to the Head Teacher twice in a week, the parents will be phoned to arrange a meeting with the class teacher.

In the event of a child becoming dangerous or uncontainable “out of the blue” he or she can be sent at once to the Headteacher or DHT – in this situation it may be necessary to send for the senior person to come to collect the pupil.

Reward Systems

Green Time:

  • 25 minutes once a week – Activities chosen by the class teacher but should always be useful and interesting and should ideally be free choice for pupils from a range of stimulating learning activities.
  • All children begin the week with 25 minutes –small chart to be displayed in classroom in such a way as it can be constantly altered as the week progresses.
  • Children will lose minutes if their name reaches the ‘red traffic light’ in class. (See sanctions section for more details).
  • Children will also lose minutes if they do not complete their homework. (Amount of minutes taken at the teacher’s discretion – to review after 1st half term).
  • Consequences are a certainty need to be adhered to. Regardless of subsequent behaviour.
  • It is also possible for the whole class to lose minutes if necessary, due to general whole class behaviour issues.
  • Display Green Time Chart as visual aid – see appendices

House Points (within year groups):

  • All year groups will run house point competitions per half term.
  • Classes should already be in, or be broken into, groups of 7 or 8 children. (The four groups should be called Longbridge, Mayesbrook, Upney and Faircross).
  • They should stay in these groups for a minimum of one academic year.
  • House points should be collected/given for good behaviour and effort. To give housepoints the adult should inform the pupil’s class teacher – form available.
  • House points can be given either 5 or 10 housepoints by any member of staff. Never more than 10 in one go.
  • They are separate from ‘Green Time’.
  • They are useful as they allow the opportunity for children who haven’t lost any ‘Green Time’ minutes to receive a reward.
  • House points should be totalled by the class teacher each week with the winning team receiving 4 points, then 3 and so on.
  • Once the previous step has been carried out the totals need to be collected and collated by a designated person in year group and then transferred onto a bar chart.
  • The bar chart should be displayed clearly for all children in the year group to see. (See photograph below).

  • During the last week of the half term the year group needs to arrange for the winning house to have a treat. This will be arranged as follows:
  • One teacher needs to be responsible for the treat given that half term.
  • All of the winning house children will go to the chosen teacher.
  • The chosen teacher will distribute the non-winning house children from their class between the other three classes.
  • The three classes not involved in the treat will engage in a regular curriculum activity.
  • The treat should last 1 – 1 ½ hours depending on the activity. (This could be playing games, watching films, painting etc).
  • After the treat has finished children will return to their original classes.

Yellow card issued throughout the school

A child can receive a verbal warning of the rules and what is expected throughout the school. If they repeat the same behaviour then a yellow card will be issued. House points will be given for good behaviour.

These yellow cards could be issued at any time of the day i.e. teachers (for messing around during the assembly time), the midday assistant (MSA) during the lunch hour, learning support assistant LSA, etc.

These yellow cards will be passed onto the office; they will pass it onto the class teacher.

In the classroom the child will explain to the teacher which golden rule they have broken and why they’ve received a yellow card. As consequences they may lose their green time or their position on the traffic lights if they have not already been dealt with e.g. exclusion from playtime (See Traffic Lights System for guidance). The form is then signed by the teacher and may be passed onto the Head teacher if they are put onto the RED part of the traffic light. These forms should be kept in the yellow wallet by the teacher for future records and in case the child has further yellow cards that week.

Yellow card given during break or lunch time

A child can receive a verbal warning of the rules and what is expected. If they repeat the same behaviour then a yellow card will be issued. If the yellow card is issued during the break or lunch time then they will be excluded from playtime and should stand against the wall from Class 9 to Class 12 for 5 minutes. All yellow card should be sent to the class teacher via the office.

For copy of the yellow card see appendices.
