MENTORING AND SERVICE GRADUATE INTERN POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Term: July 1st, 2017-June 15th, 2018.

Pay rate: $13.65/hour, 14-18 hours/week

Position Overview:

The Mentoring and Service Graduate Intern will work approximately 14-18 hours per week. The position paid hourly in the Student Community Engagement Center with the potential to become a Graduate Assistant with tuition remission of 9 credits/term for Fall/Winter/Spring terms 2017-18*. This position acts in a supporting role to the Coordinator of the Student Community Engagement Center. The graduate intern will have primary responsibility for:

  • Leading the Alternative Spring Break program including student leader recruitment, training, and program evaluation.
  • Leadership and support of the MAPS mentorship program at Alder Elementary, including supervision of 2 MAPS Student Program Assistants and 12 student mentors
  • Lead organizing role for 2 campus-wide days of service; Portland State of Mind Day of Service on Saturday, October 22, 2016, Earth Day of Service, Saturday, April 22nd, 2017

The graduate intern will play a collaborative role in:

  • Support of Service Recognition Programs
  • Support of Serve Your City Day programming
  • Management of program budgets
  • Program marketing, assessment and reporting
  • Other duties as agreed upon

Qualifications:

The Graduate Intern must illustrate the ability to model leadership and professional behavior to the MAPS. They must demonstrate the following:

  • Academic success; Intern must complete five graduate credits and maintain a 3.0 GPA per term. Eligible students must be in good standing with Portland State
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty/staff, community partners and peers
  • Ability to stay on top of multiple tasks and demonstrate follow through
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with short and long term goals and outcomes
  • Demonstration of experience and commitment to community engagement, transformational leadership and social justice
  • Illustrate professional behavior such as timely arrival, engagement in activities, communication about extenuating circumstances when necessary, and confidentiality/disclosure
  • Interest in or a desire to learn more about community engagement work on college campuses
  • Basic web/graphic design skills preferred but not required
