Hungary Creek Middle School

Physical Education and Health Department

On behalf of the Physical Education department, we would like to welcome you and your child(ren) to Hungary Creek Middle School. We have many fun and exciting activities planned this year. Units include physical fitness, team sports, lifetime activities, rhythms and dance, recreational sports, health education and family life training. The following rules and regulations will help ensure that you and your child will have a safe and rewarding physical education experience during the school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us during the school day at 527-2640.

Each student is required to wear appropriate physical education attire in order to participate in class. A Henrico County gym uniform may be purchased from the Physical Education department for $9.00 ($3.50 for the shirt and $5.50 for the shorts). Tennis shoes or sneakers are the only shoes allowed to be worn during class. NO boots, dress shoes, sandals, Sperry’s/boat or clog-like shoes will be permitted. There will be a consequence for any student without proper footwear.*(See consequences at end of letter)

No jewelry is to be worn during class. Stud earrings will be allowed ONLY during the healing process for newly pierced ears. The student must bring a note from home and wear band aids over the earrings. Band aids must be provided by the student. There will be a consequence for any student who refuses to remove jewelry.*(See consequences at end of letter)

When the classes go outside, sweat suits may be worn OVER the gym uniform. If sweats contain zippers, buttons, or snaps they must be zipped, buttoned or snapped. No sweaters or coats will be allowed for safety reasons.

Gym shorts are to be worn around the waist. ‘Sagging’ of the gym shorts will not be tolerated. Short length must adhere to the school dress code. PE shirts are not to be tied. Writing and coloring on the uniform by the student is not allowed.

No student is allowed to bring their iBooks into the locker rooms during physical education class. The student must leave their iBooks in their hall lockers.

Gum, food and drinks will not be permitted in the gym at any time. However, plastic water bottles with a screw or snap on lid will be allowed and highly recommended if the physical education class will be going outside for class. There will be a consequence for any student who chews gum in class.*(See consequences at end of letter)

Head gear/wear such as bandanas, do-rags, and scarves are not allowed to be worn during class at any time. Visors, hats and suglasses may be worn ONLY if the class is outside.

If a student does not participate or dress out in physical education class, they will NOT be allowed to participate in after-school sport activities.

Each student is required to dress and participate everyday. A parent may write a note for a student who is injured or does not feel well. The student will still be required to dress out in appropriate PE attire including footwear and participate in a limited capacity or complete an alternate assignment. A parent’s note will be good for that day ONLY. A DOCTOR’S note is required for any student who needs to be excused for an extended period of time.

All students will be assigned a gym locker in which they will keep their items locked. They must rent a V-610 gym lock from the P.E. department for $1.00. NO OTHER LOCKS WILL BE PERMITTED AND WILL BE REMOVED. Any student who loses or defaces their rented lock will have to replace it for a cost of $6.00. Items are not to be left in the locker unlocked.

Students must be in the gym before the bell rings. They will go directly to their designated locker room where they have 7 minutes to get dressed. Any student who does not adhere to this rule will be marked tardy and the appropriate disciplinary action will occur.

We understand that there are emergency situations in which a student may not have their gym uniform ready for class. A uniform may be rented for 25 cents for the shirt and 25 cents for the shorts. Students will only be allowed to rent a uniform 3 times during each nine weeks. Any student needing to rent more than three times will receive further disciplinary actions.

Any time that a student misses a PE class, the day must be made up in order to make up their lost daily points. Make-up sheets can be found hanging on the walls outside the locker rooms or can be downloaded off of your child’s physical education teacher’s website. All make-up sheets will be due before the end of the 9 weeks during which the student was absent. Any days not made up will result in a ‘0’ (zero) for that day.

Grading:

The grading scale is identical to the one provided in the student handbook. Students will be graded in two week blocks (a total of 6 days). On Tuesdays - Fridays, students may earn up to 20 points a day. On Mondays, students may earn up to 10 points. Half of their daily points will come from participation and exercises and the other half of their daily points will come from proper dress. The students overall grade will be 70% from their physical education daily grade and 30% from tests quizzes and other written work.

Please sign the the next page stating that you and your child understand the rules and regulations of Physical Education class. Return the signed sheet to your child’s PE teacher and keep the rules in the physical education section of your child’s binder. NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO TO PARTICIPATE IN PE CLASS UNTIL THEIR LETTER HAS BEEN SIGNED AND RETURNED.

On the third page are 2 copies of the make up sheet. Please have your child put this in their PE section of their binder for future use.
