Philosophy of Panther Basketball
Our overall objective is to create an environment conducive to teaching and developing basketball fundamentals and skills through effective communication skills. Our hope is to demonstrate to your son how their basketball experience is a metaphor for life and translates to positive life skills. We will practice hard in hopes of playing the game with equal determination and efficiency.
Player Expectations
- Be on time or early to practices and bus departures. All athletes are expected to arrive 10 minutes earlier than scheduled time.
- Athletes give 100% effort in all practices and games. Athletes become students of the game, and are willing to accept constructive criticism from coaches as we work to achieve team goals.
- Be a GREAT teammate. Support, encourage all members of our team.
- Represent Panther basketball, your school, your family and yourself well.
Game Expectations
- Arrival time before home games is 45 minutes before your scheduled game. Stay and support teams in our program.
- Players must have their jerseys tucked in at all times, shooting shirts must be worn during w-ups. All players should be dressed the same.
- Pregame is a preview to the game. If you are not focused in w-ups then you will not be focused for the game.
- As a member of the team, it is expected that you are focused on the game whether on the court or on the bench. Bench decorum will be enforced.
- The players on the floor need to conduct themselves in a manner which is consistent with our goal of reaching our potential. Composure is a great contributor to the success of the team. Players must maintain their composer through good times and bad. Loss of composure has a negative effect on the team and it’s players. The following actions are detrimental to the team and should never occur:
- Trash talking
- Arguing with teammates, opponents or officials.
- Belittling teammates, opponents or officials.
- Hanging your head.
- Receiving a technical for poor sportsmanship.
Playing Time /Roles on Team
Our goal is to produce competitive basketball teams. Therefore, equal playing time is not given. It is earned. It is the responsibility of the coaches to determine which players give them the best chance to be successful. Every player on the team has a unique role. You are asked to accept the role given to you. Coaches will not discuss playing time with parents but encourage athletes to communicate with coaches and be advocates for themselves.
Absences
- All athletes are expected to be at all practices and games.
- All absences will be dealt with on an individual basis. Athletes who miss practice, and games for reasons other than a school sponsored event or family emergency are subject to but not limited to extra conditioning, loss of playing time, as well as providing opportunities for others to take their position.
Injuries
All injuries that occur during practice need to be reported to the coaches immediately. If you are unable to practice due to an injury you are expected to be in attendance unless the coaches have given you specific instructions to be absent.
Uniform Responsibility
All athletes are responsiblefor their equipment. This includes washing and general care of school issued equipment. Athletes also need to be prepared by bringing assigned practice gear, game uniforms, warm ups, and proper footwear to all practices and games.
(Extra equipment WILL NOTbe handed out!)
Lettering Requirements (Varsity Only)
Many programs require a player to compete a number of games/halves to receive a letter. I believe that everyone will have a role on our team. It is my belief that you do not have to receive game minutes to be an asset to the team. Players who give there all at practice everyday are just as worthy of a varsity letter as a player playing 32 minutes per game. The following are requirements for receiving a varsity letter.
- Must possess a varsity uniform and attend all games.
- Must attend all practices and work hard everyday.
- Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.
Practice Conduct
- Be prompt to all practices. Being late is considered selfish behavior.
- Come to practice ready to play.
- Stop all action when told.
- Practice at game tempo. (All –out effort).
- Be positive and encourage others.
- Communicate. Be prepared to listen and respond.
- Attendance. You are expected to be at every practice.
Dress Code.
Teams are required to dress in a shirt and tie or sweater (no jeans) for all away games and may wear appropriate team wear/uniforms for all home games. This will be strictly enforced.
Transportation.
All athletes must ride the bus to each event when transportation is provided. Athlete’s who wish to leave with their parents after the game can. No athletes will be allowed to leave with friends, fans or by other means without a note signed by the parent and the athletic director. No Exceptions!
