- Adjective – a part of speech that describes a noun or pronoun
- Antonym – a word that means the opposite of another word
- Author’s purpose – writing for a specific purpose or reason, such as to express a writer’s thoughts, to tell a story, to inform, to explain, or to persuade
- Character traits – qualities that describe a character, expressed through words, actions, thoughts, or appearance
- Climax – the greatest point of interest in the story and when the conflict is solved
- Conflict – the main problem in a story, or the struggle between two opposing forces
- Exposition – the beginningof the story when the setting and characters are introduced
- Fact – something that actually exists; reality or truth
- Falling action – part of plot when the events lead to the conclusion

- First person point of view – the main character tells the story using the words I, me, my, we
- Genre – the kind or type of writing (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, biography)

- Summarizing – briefly retelling the main ideas in a piece of writing
- Synonym – a word with the same or similar meaning of another word (antonym means opposite)
- Theme – a message about life or human nature that a writer wants readers to understand
- Thesaurus – a reference books that lists words with similar meanings (synonyms)
- Third person point of view – the narrator is not a character and uses words like he, she, they
- Venn diagram – a graphic organizer used to compare and contrast two things (compare means to find similarities and contrast means to find differences)
- Verb – a part of speech that shows action, or state of being (is, are, was, were, am, be, been)
