A MESSAGE FROM LION PRESIDENT RICK

Lion Andy called me and said I had to get my monthly president letter into him so he could publish our newsletter. Editors and timelines geez. Ok here goes; we are 20 days more or less from our annual big shebang. We have collected about half of the crab feed money; this means it is time to get your tickets sold. No more waiting. I would also like to mention that this fall will be our 60th anniversary. We need to decide if we are going to celebrate and how. I am going to ask for a vote of the members at the February 3 meeting whether or not the membership wants to have some kind of celebration. If we decide to have this function then we need to put someone in charge of it and get the planning started. One last thing I want to thank Lion Mike Howell for stepping forward and being so kind as to arrange our monthly quest speaker. Please make a point to thank him the next time you see him. Lion Chuck Templeton has performed this important mission for many years and I know we all have appreciated the great job he has done. Please also take time to thank Lion Chuck for all of his work on this. I know that I have always enjoyed the programs you gave Lion Chuck.

That’s it.

Lion Rick Robinson, President

PROGRESS REPORT ON THE AVIARY PROJECT

As you are aware the aviary project is moving along well with the completion of the peacock condo which was finished in December and delivered to the aviary. Now master carpenter Lion Lee (“Stump Finger”) Andrews is cracking the whip over the hapless crew building 2 smaller bird nesting shelters. By the time you read this, they will be built and the project totally completed. A special thanks is due to Lion Lee for his leadership and knowledge in getting this community service project done. Without him and the use of his shop and his guidance, we could not have undertaken the task.

USELESS FACTS YOU HAVE NO REASON TO KNOW EXCEPT FOR CURIOSITY SAKE

The record for cornhusking is 46.71 bushels in 80 minutes, set by Irving Baumann in 1940. A few years ago, a West German crossword buff became so frustrated by a particularly difficult crossword that she woke her husband for assistance three times as she battled the poser through the night. The fourth time she woke him, he strangled her to death. A court acquitted the husband on grounds of temporary insanity. If you want fog, you won’t have to journey to London. The foggiest place in the US, in terms of a single-year average, is Cape Disappointment, WA, which was shrouded in fog one year for a total of 2552 hours-that’s more than 106 days! ( I wonder sometimes if Walla Walla does not beat that record!). According to legend, Henry 1 of England established the yard as the distance from the point of his nose to the end of his thumb when his arm was outstretched. Key West, FL, is not the southernmost point in the US--not since Hawaii became a state, that is. The southernmost point in the nation is now Ka Lae, or South Cape, on the island of Hawaii. A honeybee can carry a burden 300 times its own weight. To equal this feat a 250-pound man would have to carry a 35-ton truck on his back. English contains more words than any other language—800,000—but itis doubtful that any individual uses more than 60,000. Although only one foot long, a sea creature known as the urchin fish is capable of killing a 20 foot shark. The urchin fish is often attacked and swallowed by a shark. But once in the belly of the larger fish, the urchin fish blows up its prickly body like an inflated balloon, finally ripping apart the shark’s belly and swimming out of the monster’s body. From the 11,200 foot peak of Mount Izaru in Costa Rica, you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This is the only point in the Americas from which such a view is possible. It is illegal in Arizona to kick a mule and quite foolhardy as well. A mule is not liable to prosecution for a like offense. In Baltimore, it is a crime to mistreat an oyster. The term “bootlegger” originated on the Indian reservations of the West. Since it was unlawful to sell alcoholic spirits to the Indians, ingenious peddlers often carried flasks of firewater in the their boots to conceal them from government agents. Roses have been cultivated for so long that it’s impossible to determine where or when the flower was first domesticated. No species of purely wild rose remain on earth. In case you have forgotten: the face of Woodrow Wilson adorns the U.S. Treasury’s $100,000 note. (Can’t say as I remember ever have one in my billfold!). The Venus flytrap is actually misnamed, for the plant feeds primarily on ants and not on flies. But it can digest any insect, or meat in any form. Flytraps have been known to snare creatures as large as a small frog.
