MVSSCA Newsletter

Fall 2007

Greetings

Hello! I would like to welcome everybody to another exciting season of high soccer in the MiamiValley. This is probably the best way to get all of the information to the coaches within the association. The purpose of this letter is to give you the important dates and information pertaining to MVSSCA and high school soccer.

Dues

All dues are to be paid to Bob Ellis, Treasurer, no later than August 27, 2007. If the dues are not paid on time, your players will not be eligible for any All Area and All State Awards. Any questions concerning dues and membership must be directed to Bob. Last October, the association has voted to increase the local dues from five dollars to fifteen dollars in effort to keep the account from accumulating. The national dues remained unchanged at 60 dollars and will remain for one more year. However, under the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA) bylaws, the head coach must be a member of the local, state, and national associations. Check with your application for the breakdown of the dues.

Assistant Coaches Can Join the State Association for Free in 2007

The OSSCA has decided to allow all assistant coaches to the OSSCA for FREE. Assistant coaches will need to join the MVSSCA to receive the benefit and it is optional if they want to join the NSCAA.

Seed Meeting and MVSSCA meeting

The next MVSSCA meeting will be held on Sunday October 7, 20073pm. The site will be announced later. Please confirm with your Athletic Director, The Southwest District Athletic Board website ( and local website ( about the date and time of the draw. The seeding procedure will be very much the same as last year. Coaches will be posting their comments online rather than emailing the SWDAB webmaster. The All Star packet will be handed out at this time.

Ron Pinsenschaum and Kim Mahoney Respect the Game Award

I would strongly encourage the members from the MVSSCA to seek these candidates and nominate them every year. Over the past few years, I have not received any nominations for the award. The criteria for the awards are posted on the OSSCA website and will be included in the All Star packet.

MiamiValley Top Ten

Last year, we voted the local teams to the MiamiValley top ten on the website. We had a successful trial but lack participation. Only 41% of the membership participated in the local poll. I would like to see 75% participation from the membership. Everybody has an opportunity to vote. If you are a new coach, please email the webmaster: . The voting will be completed on the MVSSCA website. You will find a link on the left side of the webpage. The voting will end every week on Sunday night at 12am. The results will be sent to Dayton Daily News on Monday morning. The voting will start on the week of August 20th. This will give DDN a week to put the results in the Varsity section in Friday’s newspaper. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact either myself or the webmaster.

All State Selection

In April, the OSSCA voted to increase the number of AllState nominees from 44 to 54 players. The numbers per team has also changed. Each team will consist of 18 players. Previously, 1st and 2nd team consisted of 11 players each and the 3rd team consisted of 22 players.

New Look on OSSCA Website

OSSCA website will be getting a facelift this year. It will be similar to our own website. Sean Humenansky, Bob Eakins, Gene Pistick and Dave Sebeck from Olengtangy Liberty have been working together to make the changes. The state website will be absorbing information from all the district websites (scores, stats and other information at the discretion of each district. If you call the Dayton Daily News and/or the Springfield News Sun, your score will be listed on the local and state website. Coaches willbe able tosubmit scores and assign goals, assists, and other stats. Thenew statesite is designed to be an all-inclusive source of informationand acentralized site for entire state. The group anticipatesthe site being ready for the 2007 season, and will beworking on someelements of it as the season starts.

Coach of the Year and Private School Coach of the Year

(OSSCA-State Level Only)

Last month, the OSSCA decided to reserve the Coach of the Year for public school coaches only at the state level. Private school coaches can only be nominated for Private School Coach of the year. The change was made to make our process in line with the NSCAA process.

Tournament Cross Bracketing

Bob Eakins, Tom McEwan and I met with the board in January to discuss the myths and issues about the super bracket. We went away with a feeling that the board was emphatic in listening to our concerns. They appreciated our professionalism and called us to another meeting in March. They proposed the idea of cross bracketing. This format is similar to basketball, volleyball and other sport tournaments. The intention of cross bracketing for soccer is to maintain the consistency for other sports. I have enclosed a copy of the district assignments to this newsletter.
