2011 CORNWALL SPORTS AWARDS: THE WINNERS

Sports Volunteers have been recognised and rewarded for all their hard work at this year’s Cornwall Sports Awards Ceremony

Yesterday the 2011 Cornwall Sports Awards invited our many unsung sporting heroes to take centre stage, to receive great applaud for all their incredible volunteering efforts.

The annual event, held for the second year at The Atlantic Hotel in Newquay, on Friday 11 November, welcomed over 200 attendees from across Cornwall; including special guests ex England rugby captain Phil de Glanville and Team GB athlete Mark Lewarne.

Entertainment was also provided in abundance by the evening’s compere, Pirate FM presenter Neil Caddy. Closing the ceremony was 19 year old Cornwall Sports Ambassador Mark Stevens.

Organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, the event is now in its sixth year of celebrating and paying tribute to the many volunteers across the county who dedicate their time and efforts to supporting our strong sports community.

This year 13 awards were presented, in four separate categories, and the well-deserved winners are as follows:

·  Children’s Coach of the Year – Stephen Lowe, Crafthole District Churches Table Tennis

·  Participation Coach of the Year – Shane Tellam, Perranporth Rugby Club

·  Young Coach of the Year U25 – Vanessa Davies, One & All Judo Club

·  Performance & Development Coach of the Year – Marek Churcher, Cornwall Rugby & Truro College

·  Official of the Year – Joshua Latus – Newquay Hornets Rugby Club

·  Adult Club of the Year – Cornwall Athletics Club

·  Junior Club of the Year – Caradon Hockey Club

·  Club of the Year 2011 (chosen by postal vote, in collaboration with Cornwall & Devon Media Group Newspapers) – Penzance Tennis Club

·  Sportivate Project of the Year – Sportivate Gymivate at Polkyth Leisure Centre

·  Young Leader of the Year – Mark Stevens, Truro College

·  Community Volunteer of the Year – James Chudleigh, Looe Rowing Club

·  Community Volunteer of the Year U25 – James Burlingham, Hayle Surf Lifesaving Club

·  Lifetime Services to Sport – David Pierce, Truro Junior Hockey Club

Cornwall Sports Awards organiser, Natasha Howard of the Cornwall Sports Partnership, says: “Yet again it’s been another fantastic awards evening and we’ve been bowled over by the incredible volunteering efforts of all our winners and nominees.

“It’s an absolute honour to organise the event each year, to have the opportunity to formally thank our sports volunteers for all the amazing work that they do. It was a record year for nominations, showing how all of their efforts are being recognised and appreciated by the strong sports community we have in Cornwall”.

A variety of Cornish companies and organisations support the event, including: Truro College, Sport England, Miller Countrywide, Tony Pryce Sports, Cornwall & Devon Media, Sports Leaders UK, Pyramid Production Services and NHS Health Promotion Service.

Mark Lewarne

International Triathlete and Former International Surf Lifesaver, representing Great Britain Teams over the past 10 years. Lewarne won back-to-back European titles for surf lifesaving at a young age in becoming Dual European Junior Champion and gaining his first senior cap with the British Team in 2007 at the International Lifesaving Cup in Japan, coming away with a bronze medal.

More recently at the Beijing World Championship Grand Final in September of this year, Lewarne achieved his best ever finish at a world championship event finishing in 7th place for Great Britain.

He is also Assistant Coach to Carn Brea Swimming Club and a Performance Analyst with the Welsh Football Association and British Swimming. Mark is based in the West Cornwall, helping clients with a range of conditions from basic learn to swim techniques to advanced technical and performance related aspects including performance profiling, nutrition, body management and psychology.

Phil de Glanville

Playing Rugby Union for England 38 times, Phil captained the team for a season in 1996, and was an ever present in the squad from 1992 to the 1999 World Cup. He played for 12 years at Bath rugby club, including captaining the team for an unprecedented 5 years, winning 3 league and cup doubles and the European cup in 1998. Other honours include the Barbarians.

When rugby union was still amateur, he worked in sales and marketing for a consumer goods company, He managed to combine both jobs until he retired from rugby in 2001 He came back into sport in January 2004 when he joined Sport England in the South West, having been appointed to the inaugural South West Regional Sports Board in 2003.

He is currently a Relationship Manager for Sport England’s investment into 5 national Governing Bodies of Sport – Equestrian, Rounders, Modern Pentathlon, Rugby Union and Sailing.
