Room 502 Mr. Woods’s Class

Choir Syllabus

Welcome! My name is Mr. Woods and I am looking forward to having you in my Choir classroom! Music is my greatest passion and I look forward to helping you find your voice in choir this year! This syllabus will give you an idea of the basic things you will need to know about this upcoming school year.

Classroom Supply List:

Supplies are due to class by Monday, August 21st, 2017

●  BRING 2 SHARPENED PENCILS TO CLASS EVERY DAY

●  1 1 inch binder

●  1 box of Kleenex

●  3 different color highlighters

These items will be expected of you at a later date. You will receive more information then.

●  Choir Shirt Fee

●  Travel Fee

Thank you for your cooperation in purchasing these supplies!

Here are some fundamental class rules. We will go over these in further detail on the first day of school.

Mr. Woods’s Class Rules:

1.  Maintain an environment of RESPECT.

2.  Raise your hand to speak during discussion or silent work.

3.  Be in your seat when the bell rings. This includes the first bell and the last bell of class! Mr. Woods will dismiss you.

4.  Snacks, drinks without a closed lid, and cell phones must be put away in bags (unless it is part of the learning activity). Bags will go under your chair.

5.  Ask permission to use the restroom.

6.  Leave the classroom the way you came to it.

7.  And most importantly, EMBRACE LEARNING and HAVE FUN!

Makeup Work:

1.  Grades will show up as a zero in the grade book until complete. Do not be alarmed! They will change as soon as the work is turned in!

2.  If you are absent, you have the number of days you were absent to make up the assignment.

3.  If you miss a performance, unless you were very ill or a parent informs me of an emergency/extenuating circumstance, it will be a 0. (If you were ill/emergency, a makeup assignment will be given).

**You are responsible for your own makeup work. Make sure to ask Mr. Woods what you missed!**

Late Work Policy:

You are responsible for your own late work. While Mr. Woods will give the class frequent reminders of due dates, he WILL NOT continuously remind you of a specific assignment you are missing. It is YOUR responsibility to know your missing assignments.

Below are listed the Music Standards. Over the course of this year, each student will have the opportunity to learn about and experience each one.

▪  Pitch-I can match pitch and read/sing using correct solfege/fingering.

▪  Rhythm-I can read rhythms that include whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and syncopated rhythms.

▪  Time Signature-I can keep time in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8.

▪  Form- I can identify forms including binary, ternary, phrasic, rondo, and theme and variation.

▪  Note/Rest values-I can identify value of whole notes/rests, half notes/rests, quarter notes/rests, eighth notes/rests, paired eighth notes/rests, and sixteenth notes/rests.

▪  Sight Read-I can sight read simple musical lines that are mostly stepwise with a few tonal skips (do, mi, so) using correct solfege/signing.

▪  Perform solo and in a group-I can perform a prepared solo or piece as part of the ensemble.

▪  History and Culture-I have a basic understanding of the major periods of music history and are familiar with different jobs available in the music industry.

▪  Concert Etiquette-I understand and can demonstrate proper concert etiquette both as performer and audience member.

▪  Posture and Health-I understand and demonstrate proper posture and proper care for instrument or voice.

We have several performances this year! A calendar will be coming later this semester.. A test grade will be taken for each performance. Students must attend all required performances. If a student misses a performance for anything other than an illness, emergency, or an extenuating circumstance that is worked out several weeks ahead of time, it will be a 0. Students who miss for one of the above listed reasons will be required to make up the test grade with an alternate assignment. I will send constant reminders on Remind 101, so there should be no surprises about what is happening and when.

**There will be a few out of school practices students will need to attend as certain performances approach. This will be necessary as there are multiple class periods for the same choir ensemble.
