Lesson Plan -- Christoffel

Grade: 5

Focus: Exaggerated & Proper Proportion

Projected Time: 7, 45 minute Class Periods.

I CAN create a drawing of myself as a superhero that embodies my personal beliefs.

DOK#4: Develop an image that communicate a personal interpretation of the idea and refine them into a plan for a two-dimensional artwork.

Materials:9x12 drawing paper, pencil, eraser, Sharpies, sketchbook, colored pencils

Teaching Strategies: Day One

  • Whole Group/Guided Practice: Fill out a Frayer Model for Exaggerated Proportion, (this will also includeProperProportion).Refer to DaVinci’s Mona Lisa and Caricature of Mrs. Christoffel Mona Lisa.
  • Whole Group/Guided Practice: Give each student a check list for the lesson plus a Super Hero Profile Sheet. Read each step together and give examples to help the students brainstorm as they fill out their Profile Sheets. Discuss symbolism of color.

Day Two & Three

  • Whole Group/Guided Practice:Complete Profile Sheet. Model how to draw a logo for superhero name.
  • Analyze/Independent Practice: Students design logos and practice superheroes in sketchbook.

Day Four

  • Whole Group: Watch Youtube Video: Stan Lee on How to Create a Superhero
  • Table Groups:Discuss how Stan Lee has influenced/contributedto American art (comic books, movies, graphic novels) in the United States.
  • Independent Practice: Allow student to do a rough pre-sketch of super hero in their art sketchbooks. Give them ample examples from books listed above. When they are ready, they may move to their final paper. Drawing only!!!

Day Four-Six

  • Whole Group:Review expectations when using Sharpies, (fine tip and ultra-fine tip)
  • Independent Practice:Students will trace and color super heroes.

Day Seven & Eight (Optional)

  • Independent Practice: Student will draw, trace and color their nemesis.

Assessment Formative: Teacher conference/feedback during studio time, whole group discussion about Stan Lee, and, Frayer Model for proportion in sketchbook.

Summative Assessment: Completed project graded with rubric by teacher and student.
