Invent DCU Ltd is the Innovation Centre at Dublin City University and manages the intellectual property portfolio for DCU. Invent has responsibility for commercialisation to Irish and international companies through knowledge transfer,collaborative research partnerships, licensing and spin-out companies. We are seeking applicants for four fixed term business development posts.The successful candidates will join a team of professionals working closely with scientists in DCU’s multi-disciplinary research centres to capture, protect and exploit intellectual property. For each post it will be a requirement that the appointed candidate will work closely with research and commercialisation colleagues in The Royal College of Surgeons, Dundalk Institute of Technology and from time to time with the National University of Ireland Maynooth under the second four year phase of the Technology Transfer Strengthening initiative programme funded by Enterprise Ireland.

Business Development Managers (3 posts)

The Business Development Managers will lead the process of identification, protection and commercialisation of innovations across a range of technologiesfrom Computer Science, Electronics, Plasma Science and Technology, Sensor Technologies,Chemical Sciences and Life Sciences.The successful candidates will have experience of business development through licensing and collaborative research. These roles will include the assessment and commercialisation of technologies in partner institutions such as Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Dundalk Institute of Technology.

The successful candidates will ideally have:

  • A post-graduate qualificationin physics, chemistry, life sciences,engineering,computer science or a related disciplineappropriate to the post of interest.
  • Relevant industrial experience in commercialising new technology.
  • Proven experience of having led licensing negotiations either in a university or commercial environment.
  • Experience of national IP policies and the issues arising in the context of academic research and in particular from academic/industry collaboration.
  • A minimum of five years commercial experience in business development or product management.

Contracts Manager(1 post)

The person appointed will support the Business Development Managersand CEO of Invent in negotiating appropriate licensing and IP terms in collaborative research agreements. Responsibilities will include liaison with patent agents, drafting and review of licence agreements, IP provisions of research contracts and Innovation Partnerships, administration of consultancy and facilityaccess contracts, tracking of performance metrics and database management and reporting. Drafting and negotiating IP terms in EU funded long term research projects will be an important aspect of this role working closely with Commercialisation Managers, colleagues in DCU’s Office of Research and Innovation Support and with Principal Investigators in DCU and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Strong influencing and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work on multiple live projects in external environments with varying IP policies and organisational cultures are essential for this role. While primarily based at DCU the role may include operating from RCSI and DKIT campus on an agreed basis.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • A post-graduate qualification in science, technology, or business preferably with a qualification in intellectual property or law or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience of dealing with patent agents and researchers during the patent prosecution process.
  • An understanding of contract law with relevant practical commercial experience.
  • An appreciation of the contractual challenges of collaborative research and open innovation.
  • Familiarity with Enterprise Ireland, IRCSET and EU FP7 contract terms and conditions and relevant agreements.
  • A minimum of five years relevant professional experience.
